just toying with an idea here, but how hard would it be to set up a CarPC to automatically record from cameras mounted on front/back bumpers?

A big HDD and the appropriate software to record from a USB webcam would be the easiest/cheapest. Cant think of any off the top of my head but google it and you should get a few thousand options :P

its the "few thousand options" that concerns me...... i'm trying to short circuit the experimentation and simply borrow someone elses results

most cheaper webcams wont really cut it due to lack of frame rate and lack of antishock mountings

i do CCTV, etc and for a client we put a mobile DVR into his car with a camera mounted to the front and rear windscreens......probably not the cheapest option though as i think the 4ch DVR is around $700 alone

worked out really well.....i was surprised with the quality and it has video outputs of you wanted to use it for a reversing/parking camera setup aswell
No car, no system, no idea

Then buy some SD card cameras from Ebay - the "shotgun" style used on motorcross helmets etc. Take it from experience, a carPC is about 100,000,000,000 overkills for the application.

Go Pro is one brand I've seen, they offer a SD and HD version that mounts to your windscreen. The car carriers at work use all different ones that permanently operate for insurance purposes. Motion sensing when your vehicle is parked.. etc etc. very handy and no pc required in-vehicle.

my dad has one of the go pro ones that he uses to record his passes while drag racing, it came in a neat carry case with a bunch of different mounting options and take pretty good quality video, im not sure if you can change the quality to enable more videoing time for security purposes though

il see if i can find one of his videos...

EDIT: heres one from facebook... dunno if youll be able to view it though

If you were to build one yourself, heres a very rough estimate:

  • $100 mini-itx motherboard
  • $100 hard drive
  • $200-$300 touch screen
  • $100 case
  • $100 car pc powersupply (~12V to regulated 12V)
= $600-$700 not including cabling and cameras

Of course, it could give you alot more then just camera recording

Stick to ebay cameras like Big_Valven suggested if camera recording is all you want  :silly:

I don't think about Car PC for recording from cameras. I use home PC instead of car PC. I only use car PC for my business purpose. But when we go on picnic or long drive, it is possible to use.

Go Pro is a brand I've seen, offering SD and HD version is installed on the windshield. Carriers use a car to work every operating continuously for insurance purposes. The detection of movement when the vehicle is parked. Very handy and no need for a PC in the vehicle.
