hey all,
i own a datsun 260z, and havent started it in a little while. i knew it needed a jump, and it jumps fine, but when unplugging the jumper cables it just dies. i had another new battery laying around and that did the same thing. do i need to keep it connected for a minimum time?(i gave it 5-10 mins). im jumping it off my nissan bluebird.
cheers
steve

if you've put the new battery in then the car won't need jump starting?

if the battery in the car is flat, and it won't keep running when jump started, its quite possible the alternator is dead.

if the "new" battery has been flattened below about 10 volts, its not a new battery anymore, its a door stop.

how flat is flat? do you have a multimeter?

why was it flat then?

I've left batteries for 6 months in a car, disconnected, reconnected it and the car has started fine.

how long was it left for?

yes, start by buying a mulitmeter, even a cheapo $15 or less one will do most things you need.

start by getting a multimeter ;)

big 3 is just replacing cables, not the alternator itself, but its possible the alternator was stuffed, and the car was left with a half flat battery.

but, get a meter! it could be something else, check the unloaded voltage on the battery, check what it is with the car running.

the car idling won't really charge the battery, you need to go for a drive.

if the battery is really that flat that it stops straight away, it may be the alternator or it may be the fusible link on the alternator wire.

i just may speak to tiger, cheers :).

u can get ur bbq lunch and a maccas coffee,no worries :). can also give u a ton of bread from the bakery too ;).

well i tried the battery thats in our main car and put it in, and it did absolutely nothing. Also, i cant go for a drive, cos once you take jumper cables off, it just dies,so thats out of the question.

i woulda had to upgrade the alternator once i got all my car audio stuff anyway, was just hoping to get it roadworthy, but that got shot down pretty quick smart :P.

i keep meaning to take the alternator out,but naturally being on shift work can make it awkard.

thanks for the input!

wasnt able to inbox him :(

Jump starting is not a good solution for a vehicle.Though it start for the moment afterward it cause to other troubles.Best thing is replace a new battery.
