Greetings audio enthusiasts, and thank you for all your help thus far

I've finally run into a bit of cash and its time to add some sub bass to my system:
Step 1: Pioneer DEH 5250
Step 2: Dynamat Bulkpack Xtreme
Step 3: Crescendo Opus 8.6
Step 4: Genesis Profile2 Ultra
Step 5: Sub/s & amplification

I'm going for SQ for the set-up but I would really appreciate a sub bass set-up that can go very loud as well. I have a few spare sheets of dynamat to use in the boot for keeping vibrations to a minimum, and I only need a short length of 8g from my centre console to wherever I place the amp
-I have a budget of $800 tops for sub+amp
-I don't mind building an enclosure, but a removeable prefabricated box would be ideal
-new or secondhand is fine (i live in brisbane)

I had a quick look through some reviews on ME and found this one, but I would like a bit more information on it (their UK website seems to be down)

The sole purpose of the amp is just to power the sub, so I should go for a monoblock rather than a bridged 2 channel?
Of $800, would you spend more on the amp and less on the sub, or around the same on each?

Thoughts, suggestions?

Cheers :)

I would definitely look at 2nd hand gear with that budget. I would also:

- look for one large sub (15", 18") that works well in a ported enclosure. Subs I would look for include JBL W15Gti, Exodus Tempest, and I'm sure others can put in their 2c. I would use a ported enclosure simply because you want loud for cheap, and ported is a great way of doing this. A well executed ported enclosure should still have plenty of sound qualities in it. I would also look for one sub rather than 2 simply because you don't have heaps of cash to throw around.
- build your own enclosure. They're pretty simple, and much cheaper.
- look for a 2nd hand monoblock amp on this forum. You should match the amp to your sub, not the other way round. I'd be looking for about 500w-1000w for that price ($400-450)

Go down this path:
- work out approximately how much space you can sacrifice to your sub box in litres
- find 5 subs that will work well in that space
- get one thats cheap
- then build the enclosure to the sub's specifications
- then purchase an amp that will give the most watts for the sub's coil configuration.

The only excuse for passive crossovers is their low cost. Their behavior changes with the signal level dependent dynamics of the drivers. They block the power amplifier from taking maximum control over the voice coil motion. They are a waste of time, if accuracy of reproduction is the goal.
