Finished my install on my lancer a while ago and I'm keen on entering a local MEA comp next weekend in the novice section. For the past few weeks I've been playing around with my set-up to get it right for the comp but I would like some advice/ideas on a few last things before Saturday.

I'm still getting quite alot of rattling when I turn the sub bass up high, not sure if this will even be a problem for SQ judges though...
-my number plate which is secured onto a plastic panel on the boot still rattles a bit, try as I may with dynamat, double sided tape, sponge and foam rubber

Attached File  lancer rear.jpg   41.18K   0 downloads
-my rear parcel shelf rattles a fair bit, how should I go about deadening it? I was thinking of just taking the rear speakers out altogether considering they arent being used anyway and they are probably part of the problem
-my FRIKIN rearview mirror rattles as well. Its really annoying and I cant exactly put dynamat all over it, any ideas?!
I've deadened my doors and crossovers so they arent a problem and I still have 3 sheets of dynamat to use up.

shot fellas

^ this.
For SQ competition purposes at least, I can't see how the sub-bass would (should) be loud enough to cause such problems.

For an SQ competition you will have a really low level of sub bass. A lot of first time competitors, myself included make this mistake. Also an SQ judge will not listen to the stereo very loudly, just a 'comfortable' volume i've found. Rattles shouldn't really appear at this volume, unless they are very bad.

It came across quite abruptly yes, and that member comes out with some strange communication tactics at times - please don't be offended, however there may be some truth to what he is saying.

Your mentioned "sound quality competition" but then also mentioned this happens when the bass is up high. Tuned correctly for SQ competition, the sub woofer should not be able to distinctly heard over all your other drivers. It should blend seamlessly with your mid bass, and then mid range and highs in overall linearity. So from the limited information you have given us, it does appear that you may well be turning it up too high.

I would strongly suggest getting the advice from a professional, particularly one with experience in SQ competition. Two that can be found in QLD are Northfield Moorooka and Northfield Capalaba and you can find their contact details here: http://www.mobileele...list_retailers/

They will be able to assist you in any case with getting rid of the rattles properly for when you do want to turn it up.

Might be worthwhile heading to Northfield Capalaba if it's within distance for you. The guys there are very familiar with the MEASQ format and will be able to advise you about tuning and what sort of volume the judging takes place. Not to mention assist with any other audio/install enquiries you might have.

Umm..yes.

The idea behind sound quality is to have a ballanced frequency response - that means an even output level across all frequencies. By having all frequencies at an even loudness, it ensures that no important sounds or details are drowned out by other frequencies.

Having your sub 10 or 20 decibels louder then the rest of your speakers will lead to your subbass drowning out all of your other sound, and in MEASQ that will definately result in a poor sub-bass score.

Cheers fellas never been to a comp before, I suspected the judges wouldn't play things loud... still keen on fixing all the rattles though

I'm not in it to win it- just want the system to sound as good as possible

:)

Don't worry as one of the QLD judges I can confirm we aren't going to attack you or your system. Entering Novice class is about learning and getting advice from the judges and being able to pick our brains.

I will most likely be judging your car so make sure you ask as much as you can during the judging process.

Without giving too much away unless you have some crazy rattles i doubt the system will be getting turned up that loud. The judging volume is alot lower then you are most probably expecting. Its around speaking volume - you will be able to speak with the judge over the music without having to raise your voice too much.
No car, no system, no idea
