i've recently been reading alot about people over on overclockers with buzzing Samsungs and Sammys with dead pixels. The missus and I were looking at a new TV, but recent engagement has delayed that. Hopefully Panas will be a bit cheaper in a few months - or at least decent xmas sales on them. Thinking a Pana 55" GT (or Sammy 59" D6900 if the Panas are too $$).

I'd agree with the screen real estate thing.

I have a 50" and my room is 3.9mtrs deep.
My screen isnt wall mounted any more (long story - lets just say some people shouldnt be home renovators and that includes the previous owner of my house) so it sits probably 350 off the wall.
Behind the couch is about a 150 gap for the blinds
Then the couch and back cushion is probaby about 250 so the distance to from screen to viewing position is more like 3meters / 10 ft.
for watching TV its great but when it comes to watching movies I really wish I had a screen about 80-100" diagonally.

When we build I'm having a dedicated theatre room (although it likely wont be in the house - more than likely will be in a detached shed) and a massive projector screen is definately on the cards!

Custom dents and scratches reminding me of the good times ;)

I'm also in the market for a TV...
Considering the Pana 50" GT30...
They're going for just over $2k now.
I'd consider the 55" if it comes down to around $2k during xmas sales (fingers crossed as this is when i'll most likely buy).

I'd love to do the whole projector thing (and plan to in the future) but I require an acoustic screen which instantly means $2k+ on a 100-110" screen.
The JVC DiLA projectots do it for me, looking at around $6k for the top of the range (on special ;p)

Acoustically transparent screen.
Means I can put the speaker behind it - where it should be.

Danny you are too concerned by having the optimal all the time.
One day you'll realise that you waste a crap load of time chasing nivarna.

It's all about the journey Kirk :P

This is one area where I will not compromise.
I've done a bit of testing with Dolby Pro Logic II (PL2) in our showroom here, and having the center in the correct spot between the left and right creates excellent results.

The phantom center from the L/R and the actual center need to be in the exact same location for a realistic soundstage, and we ideally want the speakers at ear level.

In the house i've just bought, i'll be able to do this.
It won't happen straight away, but i'll design and have built a nice cabinet to house speakers, equipment, bass traps, projector screen and tv. It will run the length of the wall and you won't be able to tell what's in it

I just bought a Sony 55" EX720 LED 3D floor model for 1700 bucks . Liked the Samsung's but the full gloss screen would really get on my nerves after a while I think, the trade off of having the clarity of the gloss is reflections i guess .

Once you get any of these new tele's home and dont have 15 other brands lining up against it , then its all gravy i think .

My first sony tele and I've got exactly what i wanted . Looking forward to watching some reruns of baywatch on it now . :)
