I'm not really sure if this is the best forum to post this, but I'm really hoping that I might be able to find some valuable advice. I have two cars - a 2005 Ford Territory and a 2005 Toyota RAV. I also have two young kids, and for those that have ever reversed these sorts of cars, you'd probably understand that I am keen to look at putting in reverse camera's in the cars so that I have a better chance of making sure the kids aren't running behind the car.

But I was thinking that instead of just getting a reverse camera, I'd be interested in looking at replacing the standard stereo with a unit that has a screen that a reverse camera can be plugged into. Other bonuses on top of these would be iPod connection, bluetooth and maybe GPS as well. Now, the other thing on top of this is the fact that within Australia we seem to have a ridiculous mark up of what things actually cost. And given the AUD at the moment, I'd be keen to look at getting something in from the US. But I don't know what I should be looking for in the areas of brands, devices that are actually able to be installed in my cars and what features (apart from what I am hoping for) I should look for in a head unit.

So, hopefully someone might be able to help me out here. I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Matt

If you want navigation and a properly working radio a headunit from overseas is not the best option as they are not made for Australia. Plus if you need it installed you won't get a package deal but full labour costs as the dealer/installer doesn't make his cut on the product. It's easier and usually not much of a price difference in the end if you go and see a specialist store. Thee are several recommended on this site.

A budge for each car would help aswell to point you in the right direction.

My local stereo shop quoted me $350 plus labour just to install a reverse camera on my car. Bought a camera specifically designed for my car online for $23 and installed it myself in about 2hrs. As already suggested I wouldn't buy a US unit due to compatibility reasons.
