Hi guys, I'm looking into selling my GTS and buying something which I'de actually enjoy driving. The GTS sits in the shed for 360 of the 365 days in a year as
#1 i dont want to run unneccessary kms up or damage such a rare and collectable car and
#2 I dont enjoy driving it as it does what it is supposed to do being a muscle car and thats go really fast in a straight line and not much else.

While I love the car I cant justify the expense to have it sitting there, unused, waiting to see if the market will appreciate its value.

If I was to sell it, at todays current market I'de be looking at somewhere between $28000-$32000 to spend on a replacement car.

I've thought about buying another WRX and continuing from where I left off with my old WRX, but this time in V5 or V6 STi guise and I've also found I can buy a tidy modified MY04-06 STi for similar money.

What are your thoughts on a decent replacement that

a: must be unique or uncommon
b: performance orientated
c: ex-showcar would be ideal
d: must have rear seats (coupe/sedan)
e: good handling
f: comfortable

I'm not at all interested in european cars so it must be Jap or Aussie.

i would go the WRX or EVO of the same age .

both cars well work for you and all the performance/service backing is hear and not all the way on the other side of the world .

in saying that the mark 5/6 golf gti really go like a bat out of hell . dont rule them out compleatly untill you have given them a good drive . you never know untill you try .

if it was me i would be looking at a EVO 8 MR , that is what i would buy if i have to upgrade from my 06 WRX.

STI Forester, if you can find a genuine one.:good:

I have only ever been a passenger in an EVO 7 but you feel like a complete tool, people that know nothing about cars think you are in a NA crapbox with wings and people that do know cars want to race. They are a good way to lose your licence, cops drive a range of different cars so you never know who wants to race, the one I was in had 240KW ATW and the owner sold it because it was too boring on the road.

I was going to say Abarth 500 but the no Euro and needs back seats rules it out, small cars are the only way to have fun without losing your licence.

Well you almost perfectly described a Euro car Dan, but what about:

TRD Aurion
Lexus GS/Toyota Aristo
Nissan Stagea
Mitsubishi legnum or galant

Yeah Ross, what euro car(s) were you thinking?

I looked at GTi Golfs, but couldnt see myself in another high powered fwd car so it rules out GTi, Ford Focus, Alfa Romeo etc. Golf R32 is nice (a mate drives one so I can easily get my hands on one for a decent test drive) but would hate to imagine maintenance/repair costs if anything went wrong :(

I have the exact same oppinion on the EVO... too many evo body kitted NA lancers have spoilt the appeal of a real EVO which is a shame as they are a great car

Well I might look into euro cars as running costs arent really important as it would be doing less than 5000km per year and maintenance costs of my current car is high based on the requirement for OEM parts to maintain originality for resale value.

After seeing Dan's post about the R36 the other day, I drove home from work last night and lo and behold, there was an R36 'wagon' parked on the side of the road here in Ballarat!
Looks better in the pictures than in the flesh . (imo)

If it was in budget, I really would consider one for myself but with the modest budget I have to work with could barely afford the baby brother; the R32 (golf).

Adam: really? what colour was it? I've only seen one R36 in the flesh and it was a very dirty/muddy one at one of the construction sites I work at.

Dan, it was that VW 'royal blue' colour with chrome trim. And was also rather dirty, so that may have affected how it looked.

Plus one for the Passat R36, saw a very nice one here in syd drive past the other day, I thought it looked surprisingly tuff for a VW.

I didnt realise the E46 M3 had come down so much in price. They are my absolute favourite German car, no questions asked!

Whats wrong with the SMG slushbox?

I wont buy another bogandore/falcondore/commondore or any derivative of it as it just isnt me and thats most of the reason I'm selling what I already have.

So far the choice is looking:

MY99 V5 STi (2 door)
MY07 WRX STi
MY10 WRX STi Spec R
MY11 WRX Premium
E46 M3
E46 330Ci
R32 Golf

R36 Passat
MY10 Liberty GT
MY07 Liberty GT STi

All those cars (minus the R36) are fairly common so wouldn't that rule them out? If I had to choose from those it'd be the 99 STi (or a 22B to be unique lol).

I saw an EVO 7 that had been de-winged yesterday and I had to do a double take, god it looked good, tough stance without the wanker shopping trooley look.

Pretty sure I saw an STI Forester a couple of weeks ago, it was an odd looking thing and looked better in pictures than real life.

What about an IS30? They are an awesome looking car with decent aftermarket support and for some reason the P platers seem to shy away from them.

soarer = ghey. Overweight, underpowered and ruined by the horrible sludgebox auto which is usually found in them. In my oppinion it was over engineered for no reason at all.

I'm still in the process of selling the GTS and once it has gone will actually go test driving.

I'm fairly certain the Golf is ruled out as I have now driven one and was rather unexcited by it. It still felt like a kitchen appliance... a good one like a Miele instead of an LG or Samsung.

MY2011 WRX is also in the mix as they now have the STI widebody and are quite affordable even as a brand new car

Ha ha I wrote iS30, definately meant 300.

Those new STI's still take a set of rims and a slight lowering to make them look acceptable and stop it being mistaken for a Kia, horrible looking car In My Opinion.

Focus XR5? Uses the only good bit in a Volvo, with a tune and an exhust can nudge 230Kw, get great economy and also have the best exhaust note of any poor persons sports car.

I absolutely love the XR5 but wouldnt own one. I drove my friend's 2011 XR5 (full options) and LOVED it, however the annoying torque steer would definately be irritating enough for me not to own one. The Liberty GT, as mentioned is also very nice: kinda a grown up and mature WRX

Problem with the MY09,10,11,12 WRX and Liberty GT is the huge boxy guards demand big wheels and low offsets however based on the 5x100 stud pattern there is a very small choice of wheels available. The MY09,10,11,12 WRX STi uses a more standard 5x114.3 stud pattern like the majority of Jap performance cars. This also means you can no longer run STi wheels on an Impreza or WRX without changing hubs/brakes.

I have found one late model Liberty which has overcome this issue by custom sized wheels or stud pattern change/adaptors

Its a shame the standard car is so damn ugly with the horrid undersized wheels.

Subaru have got it right with the interior though:
