Just bought a Nissan Pathfinder with a Pioneer AVH-P3350BT double din HU already installed. Supposedly done professionally but it was not wired into the steering wheel controls.

Stereo shop has quoted me $350 to wire this up but I think I have found the loose plug inside the dash and may just need a wiring harness adaptor into the back of the HU? Is it this simple or does the entire steering wheel need to be dismantled and wires rerun?

Anyone had any luck connecting steering wheel controls to aftermarket stereos?

You'll find HEAPS of people on MEA who run aftermarket headunits with the steering controls.

It's not part of a standard installation, professional or otherwise, so don't worry too much about that. The reason is that it takes an adaptor box to run any car's steering wheel buttons into an aftermarket headunit. The box is an extra cost, as is the time to install and program it. So it's generally only offered as an option, and $350 sounds about right for it, as most adapters retail for $200+ on their own.

Times two. Once you have had SW controls it,s hard to go back. Most cars I do only 1% of people get the control connected due to price. I try to sell Eclipse nav as it can do alot of cars with no extra parts. Some to think about for those upgrading in the future. Stay clear of ebay unit yes some will do sw control but do not last. You get what you pay for in life.

My 2 cents

For ~$50 you can get an Axxess steering control interface and solder it yourself if you're confident. I got one for my subaru liberty and it works sweet with my pioneer P99!

Thanks guys. Pretty confident with a soldering iron and identifying which wire does what. Might do some more research into the adaptor boxes, just finding it a little hard to justify $350.

ok, after thinking that this wouldn't be possible confidence is high again. Can anyone confirm the following....

Pioneer AVH-P3350DVD HU actually has the ability to accept SW control input? This is the 3.5mm jack for "wired remote input" on the back of the HU right?

Anyone have any idea what range of DC voltages I should expect across the wires from the steering wheel controls (+/- 12volt???)

Aftermarket adaptor box and my own soldering and programming could be the way to go. May/may not last but at least I'll learn something and not have to pay $350. I'm sure there are some not recommending DIY on car audio but I'd appreciate any advice and be happy to share what I learn if this works.

Thanks, where did you get yours from? Axxess US website claims there product will work on a Pathfinder but this may be US based? Are these Axxess interface units all the same and just the wiring diagram and programming that differs? Alberts shop assures me that it won't work.....

Cheers

Thanks, do you have any more info on this product? Supplier or website? Is it programmable and suits all cars and HUs?

The only difference between vehicles is which wires to solder and what procedure to use to get the unit to detect the signal coming from your vehicle's steering wheel controls. I got mine from a guy in the US that makes custom wiring harnesses for subaru (ae64.com). My australian subaru liberty is different to the US one but it still worked. Albert's is talking crap and just want your money!

yeah, cheers. Bit of research and there seem to be a few options including the wholesale DIY version of what Albert's are offering. No offense to retailers but I'm an internet shopper and DIY kind of guy. Might post up on here if I get it nailed.....

you need that and a APPIOA to suit the Pioneer.

My Aerpro book says 07 on so assume its still current despite what the ad states.

There is a distrubutor in Perth I buy from but they are not available to the public.
My cost on both items is about $65 so expect retail around the $130 mark anywhere in Perth.
The part number for the Nissan interface linked above is CHN12A

the control harness you are after is the CHNI2A and you will also require the patch lead APPISOA

for your headunit you will need the APP8PIO5

Pricing of these products are
CHNI2A RRP $99.99 (inc. GST)
APPISOA RRP $29.95 (inc. GST)

APP8PIO5 RRP $14.95 (inc. GST)

Thanks guys.

What is the advantage of all these products and additional patch leads etc compared to a PAC Audio product such as this?

http://www.ebay.com....=item1c1cc57462

I can do the programming myself and not sure what all the additional plugs on the Aerpro products are for. The HU is already up and running with all existing wires. Just need to convert SW wire signals to 3.5mm jack in back of HU.

Please excuse any ignorance, I may be missing something

I had a lot of success with the PAC-SWI in my commodore. Worked a treat, and picked it up for $50 or so on Ebay.

I put up a thread on it in the 'Tutorials' section. Programming was pretty straight forward too.

Good luck!
