I had a look at some jumper leads to keep in the boot but all of the ones I saw were 80% insulation 20% wire so I'm thinking of making some.

Has anyone made their own and if you have what size wire did you use and what style of clamps did you use? I imagine some earth clamps for a welder would be great clamps but I'm thinking they wouldn't be cheap.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have a decent one that was store bought afaik.. it's pretty beefy, and it works really well... also has a thing to stop you from attaching it the wrong way... it lights up if you've wired positive to negative, and doesn't spark... it's pretty clever ;D

I made a set for work using Mig earth clamps and "000" gauge about 5mts for jumpstarting the bus's.Plus Ive got a 3mt set of "0" that was made using clamps from another buggered set that stays in my boot.
Your right about the insulation and lack of real cable in new ones hence why I made my own.
earth clamps were only 12-15 each

Welding suppliers sell good earth clamps relatively cheap. Most peoplewith decent jumper leads I know have made their own.
You can get some ok ones butbe prepared to pay...

I fix welders for a living, and we made up some nice jumper leads for the engine drives we repair.

The clamps are cheap as. Just get 4x 200A clamps and some 25mm^2 cable, stick some lugs on the end and bolt the clamps on. Easy.

Good thing with welders clamps are that they are designed to withstand a reasonable amount of heat with out the spring loosing tension. Most off the shelf jumper leads can barely hold their own weight.

And often the cheap jumper lead clamps are made from recycled sheet metal. I swear I've seen some that had printing on the metal like baked bean cans if you looked inside the clamp....
