So my front wheels are starting to get a bad case of brake dust-itis.. anyone have any miracles for this horrible problem? Another forum i'm on said Jiff works well, as well as an all purpose cleaner from bunnings.. and somebody said turtle bug and tar remover..

Just wanted to see what you guys claim as your miracle worker, and such.

I use Auto-Glym custom wheel cleaner on my car. I suppose it does also depend on wether your wheels are chrome, polished alloy, steel but yea there are quite a few things that can work around the house hold as well

beleive it or not i use auto glym motorbike cleaner :D
i used to use meguiars wheel cleaner but i found it pretty average, one day i run out of it and thought id try the motorbike cleaner as its water based and safe on all surfaces.

Basically i just spray, give it a little scrub with a soft wheel brush and BANG! best thing ive ever used haha

I've used both Mequires "chrome acid wash" and "polished wheel cleaner". Both are in spray bottles and both have worked well for me.

hmm... might give this bike cleaner thing a crack.. i did get heckled by some dudes at kmart who had some miracle can cleaner stuff which cleaned ALL surfaces of your car.. and it repelled.. for a bit. he cleaned my wheel (on the old civic) and then got some brake dust from another spoke, wiped it on the clean spot, and voilla.. no mark. looked great, but i had no money. haven't seen them since.

Yeah it really depends on what type of wheels you have...

I generally tell people that they shouldn't use a wheel cleaner unless they can't get it off with car wash and a brush/sponge:
- Meguiars and mothers make pretty good ones over the counter
-p21s is generally considered the best and most gentle, but is quite dear, and something you find online

May be a good idea to get a wheel protectant after you clean them:

- Autoglym makes one over the counter
- Poorboy's and chemical guys make wheel waxes available over the net

I echo the clay bar comment in the other thread...If you keep going to harsher and harsher stuff, eventually you will stuff the wheels

Bottle of earth choice floor cleaner from coles diluted with water in a spray bottle. Works quite well and there's no harmful chemicals.

I'm keen to hear any feedback on tyre shine/care too actually.

Thinking about picking up some of the Poorboys Bold'n'Bright. Any feedback?

Have fairly large road tyres on the Pajero, look great nice and shiny. Have tried a couple of different ones but the best so far seem to be the $3 aerosol sprays from Supercheap.......

The rear tyres don't seem to want to hold the shine as long as the front though so I'm pretty keen to make the move to something which seems more reliable, like the boldnbright.

As for cleaning the wheels, I usually just get in there with the usual car wash, maybe a bit of Autosol polish if I'm keen and not sick of it after doing the bullbar.

what wheels do you have? thats the most important question...

i find personally, that oven cleaner can do amazing things for seriously built up grime, be it brake dust, dry brown tires or engine grease... but the trick is the time you allow it to sit... oven cleaner is highly caustic, so if you leave it on too long, it'll eat into your rubbers, paint and other surfaces, BUT if if left for only a minute or so, and worked in small area's then it can REALLY lift some serious grime and take alot of the effort out of cleaning...

i'd definitely not left it near your paintwork, and do it as the 1st thing you do before applying waxes etc, as even minor overspray will strip back waxes and sealants/polishes etc...

but for deep cleaning of rims/engine/underbody etc etc, it does a fantastic job!

as for the guys that hassle you in car parks etc with their polish stuff, i actually bought a can of the stuff just the other day, usually $48 for a single can, or $80 for 4 cans, i got the guy down to $30 for the single can, i was happy about that!! i find it's about the best stuff i can find for glass and chrome, works well on paint too, but i like it for glass mostly... AutoGlym makes a VERY similar product, the Instant show shine another fantastic product, and is around $19 from any autobarn....

Ah fair enough sir.

The wheels i'm currently running are Speedy hyperfang 15" wheels.. I'm assuming they are powder coated, but as i said, i'm not entirely sure..

I should try the normal wheel cleaner/ car wash, but i have to put in the window seals first since they are mostly f'ed in the a.. By seals i mean the ones in the side windows :| wewt $100 worth of seals.

But yeah, i'll give a few things a crack, and report back with my progress.. might get onto the installing of the seals tomorrow :D

Haven't been disappointed with a chem guys product yet...although I haven't tried this one. I try not to let my wheels get to a stage where I would need it
