Wow I need a new camera, I'm thinking of getting a micro 4/3's Lumix thingy as I want something that will fit in a Camelbak with a fish eye lens, currently only have a Lumix LX3 but my brother has a 1DS MkIII and used to run a couple of adult sites and was also the photographer, he gets some nice shots, ha ha.

Couple from my little pocket camera-

Thought I'd ask here for some options for a decent 'newb' DSLR (if there is such a thing), or what to look (or look out) for. Not looking for myself since as you can see I have zero photography skills. Though it was a very nice car to work on lol.

I just bought a Canon 350D. I would rate it as a very nice camera, sufficient for a beginner, and also has the advantage of being able to get some decent lenses for it, making it a camera that can last a while.
Add to that they cost around $300 2nd hand, makes them very attractive.

Nikon also have an equvalent (forget the model number). I would stick to those 2 brands as they have the easily the biggest following, making purchases of lenses and associated gear a bit cheaper (and more likely to get 2nd hand bargains).
If you are a member of OCAU check out their 2nd hand section, amazing bargains there.

From what I have heard Nikon are starting to use plastic lenses in the low end SLR gear and it has been made in China for a while now, I'm a sucker for buying gear that is made in it's home country and it looks like more and more low end stuff is going to China which had to happen at some stage.

I'm tinking of getting one of these when the price drops a little- http://panasonic.net...h2/control.html

I have used a 550D and a 350D(or the previous model) and I hate them they are just not user friendly at all and the auto mode on both cameras for some reason sets the shutter speed to about seven days, if it's not a portrait it can't be shot in auto. I know they are good cameas but if I can't pick it up and use most of the features woithout going to the manual I don't want it and a 3" swiveling touch screen is more use to me than a viewfinder for the shots I will be taking.

Oh and to add to my Canon hate I bought a waterproof case for my Ixus and I got to use it once before my lens would no longer retract, I hated that camera so I was just going to use it for using in the wet but now I have a $350 case with no camera ha ha.

My DMC LX3 is a bit over two years old, it was left in my Camelbak in the rain and I didn't realise til a couple of days later and the camera was pretty wet, I have dropped it on the lens, on the screen and generally abused the crap out of it but it is still going strong, for a toy camera it is really good.

Sorry for the angry rant, working on my car has made me bitter, plus I have burnt plumbers working on it yesterday, ha ha.
