I'm not surprised you were having trouble with a 3G, it is noticeably slower than later iPhones, both the processor and the storage chips. I think 3G users might be better off with a Pioneer or other non-Alpine head unit.
The CDA-117E doesn't cache the contents of the iPhone, so every button press goes to the iPhone and back again, so you're paying for the communication time between the head unit and the phone, and the time the phone takes to do anything. The upside is faster start up, and better support for jumping between devices (my wife's phone, my phone, and an iPod).
My last Pioneer cached the data, so startup the first time after you added any music was slow, but browsing and searching were much quicker. It only talked to the phone when you changed tracks or selected a new playlist.
Slowly rebuilding a 1989 BMW 750i - Got the head unit, need some better speakers and an amp.

As a 3G user I've had spotty Alpine connection/performance depending on what iOS was in use. Directly relational to the performance (or lack of) of the phone.

I've found the most acceptable level performance was from iOS 3.1.3 (which I have downgraded to - again and again and eventually just left at).

To solve the issue with poor iPhone/head unit interaction I've just recently sourced a cheap iPod classic for in-car use. Now it's faster than it's ever been and also no more 'Error #3' or starting playback from the 1st song on the phone every time. And also no more issue with bluetooth callback sometimes kicking over to current playing song blasting down the phone line at my wife :)

My ipod classic 160gb is very fast on my 117e... If you are really annoyed with how slow your iphone is, just get a classic, and it'll do the job. :D
