starting to wonder if socket 1366 is worth the hassle and extra $ for a fairly basic work PC

That is a bit more than just a simple work computer.

How large is the business that it is going into? Do you really need 3 HDD's? I ask because often larger businesses often have centralised network drives that users store their content on.

BluRay burner? Need to burn BDs? How about just a DVD-RW, or even a bluray rom/DVD-RW combo.

The i7-960 is the previous generation of Core I series. Do you need a quad core, or would dual core be enough? You could step it down to a Core i5 second gen, and get the WiDi technology to push the display to a WiDi enabled box.
ASCII a stupid question, get a stupid ANSI!

interesting about the second gen core i5's
Might look into that a bit more.
WiDi doesnt interest me at all to be honest in this environment. Its likely the OH cranes would cause issues any way. Plus my understanding is this isnt available on desktops any way.

3 HDD for raid 5 - really no biggy
There is centralised storage - but I like to have decent storage myself. Gotta store my porn somewhere and on the network probably isnt appropriate :P
BR burner. Yeah the reason for this would be that this will be the only PC in the company with Bluray burning we are seeing a few models (no not single models - entire projects, several models) come in on BluRay on larger projects. Currenly if we need to burn these to send onto sub contractors we need to take them home to do or we seperate the models onto seperate discs. IF that ends up in this PC or more likely the reception PC is neither here nor there - either way we want to purchase one.

Business is small from an IT perspective. There are only 8 PCs in the office and most of the other users are used for almost purely spreadsheet based work.
Im a darfty by trade and I often review models to see what a drafty or engineer is talking about so I do occasionally throw a decent sized model around. Not as much as I would like admittedly but still it is something I do.

Intel CPU Core i7-2600K - LGA 1155
$325.00

Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 Intel Mainboard (B3 Stepping) - LGA 1155
$162.00

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64-bit - OEM
$149.00

If I change to these components and loose the GFX card and go with onboard GFX for the time being I can save some conciderable coin...

the motherboard has 6 ram slots?

500w psu may not be enough, you would preferably want an 750-800w for a decent graphics card.

If you plan on using it for modelling, it probably couldnt hurt to have a kickass cpu and mobo since they r fair heavy workloads. I defiently would think about a top mobo and cpu for that.

good place to start to work out the PSU size you need.

personally i would go a AMD Phenom X6. then in a year or two you can pull it out and stick in one of the new Bulldozer chips that are coming out without any issues intel change their sockets too much and upgrading ends up being a whole mobo change out too..
but thats just personal preference.

other than that it looks good
QUOTE (RMA @ Feb 6 2010, 01:22 AM) My only regrets are:
Selling Fudd an amp (for a fraction of the real price) that had been returned by Autobarn Geelong which had been incorrectly used by AB Geelong and turned out to be faulty when Fudd started using it.
Whilst he was given a new amp after it could not be fixed, he never acknowledged any of the assistance given and bitches to this day about it.

This is what I ended up ordering.

I get what your saying Re AMD chips and I agree - Its just I've always felt more comfortable with intel chips - particularly in an office.
I realise the GFX card is a gaming card not a workstation card but Ive had supprisingly good results with gaming cards in the past and at significantly lower pricing than a proper workstation card its a risk im happy to take.
Lets be honest the MB isnt exactly "workstation grade"

I got the price down to just under $2500 delivered and insured so pretty happy with that.
Especially when you take into concideration a BT desktop and reasonably decent 2.0 speakers.
Just feels odd as its the first time I've not ordered two identical machines.

intel chips crap all over amd for office but not gaming. So you made the right choice with intel (and i prefer amd).

It equated to about 557 watt so hopefully ur psu will be ok :)

I think it'll be fine. I actually got 460ish watts when I did the new egg thing. Even then the GPU is unliely to be loaded right up when the Bluray burner is in opperation etc.
PSU isn't an expencive item should I need to replace it any way.

Now just waiting on centrecom...
Nearly every item is on back order though :(
Sucks cause this PC is randomly rebooting when put under any load.

^ depends on why you need to get it replaced. if you need to replace it because it overloaded it might have taken out a lot more than just the PSU so could get quite expensive. it's always better to buy a good quality powers supply with a litte head room, just to make sure.

^ yup. If the comp keeps rebooting like my old AMD Xp 2200+ did i had to have a fan on the outside of the case pointing directly at the cpu and psu (it was a midi case), so it might be a heat issue.
I ended up getting a volcano 7+ heatsink for the cpu and it did wonders.

I doubt I'll overload the PSU.

However overloaded PSU isnt the issue with my (now deceased) PC.
The ram has an error is the main issue.

Truth be told if I wanted to spend the time and reload everything onto a new HDD and track down which stick of ram has the fault the PC would most likely be fine. But it'll still be a 5yr old PC running XP pro and office 2003 which causes me issues with compatability with files on newer office being sent to me and I'm an OS or two behind where I should be...

still awaiting 3 items at centrecom...
