Ok, so i have a REALLY bad old pc, and can't really afford a new one... so basically, i'm after a decent graphics card to replace mine..

What i have to work with:
PCI x14 i think (note i said PCI not PCI-E)
AGP x8

I have a 250watt psu, 1.5gb ddr400 and sch ram, 2.8ghz single core.

The card i have currently is an nvidia FX5500, which as i've been told is a completely crap card. not entirely sure what would be good..
anyone have any suggestions? i'm aiming for 256mb or 512mb if possible... my current card is 256, but doesn't act like it, and has multiple driver problems.. preferably aiming for under 100$.. if anybody has a card they know would run off my computer, i'd be willing to take it off your hands, else if you know a good one that'd suit, do tell :D

Cheers

An answer to your question is maybe a 6200-6800GT for $50-75 will get you about all you need out of a fairly mainstream and readily available card.

What about a different idea....

AMD X2 4800+ (dual core)
Gigabyte brand AM2 mainboard
2Gb DDR667 RAM
80GB SATA Hard Drive (a weak point)
DVD Burner
Card Reader
PCIe 16x slot
Radeon HD5450
Slimline desktop case (maybe another weak point?, but you can pull the gear out and reuse your case if it's better)

.... for your $100? (posted, if you're in Tassie)

We decomissioned these last year at work (the PC's with onboard graphics), and I have one of those graphics cards left.

Also, if you've only got the $100, that's fair enough, but if there's scope to spend more and shop around, you could get new parts for just under $250 delivered.

Same card or maybe slightly better, low end dual core AMD, mainboard of some description, 4gb DDR3 and upgraded power supply.

wow? really? that'd be a pretty good starting point for upgrading.. that way i could actually upgrade things one part at a time, and then slowly get to my quad core with 4gb ddr3 with 1gb ddr5 gpu :o

but seriously, i would take that offer!
QUOTE (RMA @ Feb 6 2010, 01:22 AM) My only regrets are:
Selling Fudd an amp (for a fraction of the real price) that had been returned by Autobarn Geelong which had been incorrectly used by AB Geelong and turned out to be faulty when Fudd started using it.
Whilst he was given a new amp after it could not be fixed, he never acknowledged any of the assistance given and bitches to this day about it.

Seriously Fudd how many tabs of porn do you need open at once?

FFS mate put down the cock and get a grip on something else for once.

I could build myself one for 1k... It's getting te 1k that is the problem... Gotta factor in: I owe the local audio store $500 of layby, which I am well over due with (luckily they are ring nice and letting me take my time) also need to upgrade the car/ fix the car... Lots of money to be needed, and my job doesn't supply enough D: need a better job, maccas isn't good for supporting a hobby

Buy what Selfdestruktor is offering! Hell you can pick up a 1TB hdd down the track for under $100 if you need more storage and you cant use your existing HDD
That is a good buy!

i might have a spare graphics card hanging around(nothing flash but plays decent games well).

With graphics cards, its more the speed of the gpu over the amount of memory it has.

what single core is it? if its a top P4 chip they were amazing chips. if its AMD, buy a good cooling fan and you will be able to hit 3.5ghz no sweat. AMD always allowed at least 20% overclocking on them. It does decrease the life of the cpu, but since in the early 2000's they were given a lifespan of 25yrs...i think it goes to like 10yrs when going at max capacity so :).
