as for whether to go with Telstra or Optus, that would depend largely on the phone you want to get and also which is more important to you, price or coverage. if the phone you want it is compatible with the 850MHz 3G frequency and phone coverage is your main concern i would go with telstra and their Next G network. Telstra can't be beaten for coverage but you will pay with it in both the pocket and an apparent lack of customer service.
If cost is your main concern then i would recommend Optus. In metro areas they are fairly on par with telstra as far as coverage goes but you can get better cheaper deals with them. Their 3G network operates on the 2100MHz and 900Mhz frequencies so make sure the phone you choose is compatible with that but most phones these days are.
i leave you with this short, comical yet extremely accurate video

However, we moved out into a more rural area of Sydney, and there is ONLY Telstra reception until you drive at least 15km towards Sydney's CBD.
I went to the Northern Territory this year - Same story, only ever Testra reception (full 3G in Uluru!) or Optus was just the basic 2g reception available.
In my experience, Telstra is far better if you live or often go to areas outside of the metro and CBD, but if not, it's a much of a muchness. They are all a pain in the anus to get a hold onto over the phone.
Avoid 3 at all costs, I don't get reception in most places, even in fairly densely parts of Sydney's suburbs.

Optus promises you a million dollars in calls, unlimited texts, MMS and data, but whats the bloody point when you've got no coverage to use it?
I can stand side by side with a mate, exactly the same phone, mine on Telstra, his on Optus, and can browse the net or use Facebook at easily 5x the speed. And if you've got data reception, then you're good to go for calls and texts.
The end.

A lot of the phones from Mobicity are grey imports and warranty is through Mobicity, not the manufacturer.
Mobileciti, (similar name, different business) sell Australian stock. http://www.mobileciti.com.au/mobile-phones/
Also, take a look at the Whirlpool forum for more info. http://forums.whirlp...et.au/forum/114
...but like others have said, go with Telstra if coverage is your main priority.
