I used to do some dodgy crap on mIRC and I met some very friendly females from the internet.

Yeah I get that but what im saying is that its not that easy. Kids are pretty crafty.
You think these days a 7" eeepc is <$50 second hand. WiFi is everywhere and its not that hard to find an unprotected wifi. Seriously sitting here in my study theres 6 wifi signals with SSID visible 2 are unprotected and I know from when my net has dropped out when my modem died that one of them has the passphrase '1234ABCD'. Your kids could be on the interwebs without you even knowing in no time even if you have a no phones in bedrooms, no computers in bedrooms policy.
Think about when you were 15. I dont know about every one on here but at 15 I was drinking most weekends and I pretty much lived my school holidays stonned or otherwise off my head. I came from a pretty strict family. Computer was always in a communal part of the house I didnt have a computer in my bedroom till I was well over 18. That didnt stop me. I drank, did drugs, stole cars and was organising rendezvous on mIRC right under my parents noses. 'alt'+'tab' and a screen shot of the desktop with the programs I was allowed open on the task bar then move the task bar to the top of the window and auto hide I could have mIRC, ICQ, Y! and MSN open (amoungst other things) and my parents would come over and look and see I was working on my assignment and only had word/excel and 'encarta' open. Hell my parents were pretty naive (thankfully cause I'm not that cluey!) I didnt really even have to try hard. Most of my freinds used all kinds of trickery using things like litestep and windows blinds to create all kinds of 'false' desktop environments.
For someone like me you put up a barrier and it was just bait as far as I was concerned - a tease. How long is it going to take me to get around over or through this barrier.
Back then it was slightly easier for our parents as they could see the dial up modem and if it was on or not. (I installed an internal modem to get around this)The reality is your really only ever going to protect the naive kids. The cluey/suss kids are always going to be miles infront.
I guess the thing is that the kids that are street smart arent going to be as affected by things as the naive kids.
These days its way harder. You need to explain dangers - minimise risk. You'll never completely 'internet proof' your kids. They're always going to have the upper hand unless your really onto technology and school yard fads. Fact is that these days I'm so far removed from a lot of internet culture that I dont get a lot of acronyms thrown around on mature audience website. Id hate to think what I'd be missing if I had teenage kids.

Go telstra if speed and coverage are more important than cost.
Go optus if you're happy with 80% of the speed and 95% of the coverage, but want to save a bit of money.
Go vodafone if you're an idiot.

Customer service is a pathethic between all carriers so I wouldnt be choosing just based on customer service alone. Pretty much most call centres are headed overseas so that these phone carriers can reduce cost and sharpen pricing so it is a matter of you get what you pay for.

Ballarat is rural and Optus coverage is better than Telstra here. Same goes for Dayelsford.
So not all rural customers should automatically go with Telstra, depends on coverage in your area. (But yes, I'm aware Optus coverage in some SE areas is very sketchy)
