Custom passive crossover for midbass/midrange easy?

This still rings very true. If simplicity is the aim a passive crossover will do the job; ask yourself what you're trying to achieve though because if you just want another speaker in your door and your system won't support it properly, is it going to make things better or worse?

by the time I went from 2-way to 3-way, I knew that's what I needed to do.

It's really a big step, and doubles the complexity of any problems in the system (2x the crossover points to calculate).

The biggest disadvantage of a custom passive - if you want to change it, it's a complete rework.
