Hi guys, i know this has come up before but for some reason at the moment the search feature does not like me.

I know SEM is a brand that seems to be dominating the market but i don't know where in Aus i can get it.

Would anyone be able to help me out and point me in the direction of someone who sells textured spray paint ? (preferably something to match the factory wrinkle trims)

I've heard there is a sales assistant at this place, who is quite informed and has done a "stone" finish once before, that was quite close to what you're wanting.. :pp
I pinched this from his sig..

Haha you funny bugger, doing a black stone finish is my next resort, and i dont wanna try to trowel the texture coats i have, i would like to see what all the fuss is about with the SEM stuff if i can though.

Thanks Ubernoob I'll look into that, i was browsing the plasticote range today at bunnings but saw nothing of the sort however.

Awhile back I tried to get a hold of the SEM texture coat, and due to USPS, in their INFINITE WISDOM, dropping the whole sea mail option, you can't get the spray cans sent over airmail. @#$%^
There is a SEM distributor in Sydney though who has normal tins of the stuff, probably not your cheapest option but it does look awesome.

(Internet is capped atm or i'd bother looking it up for you - info is on the SEM US site)

Edit: That white knight stuff was awful.. tried their metallic silver, it was crap.. doubt their texture is any better. And the hammer finish cans are crap too.

How about K&H Bumper and Trim paint (Distro'd by 3M)?

It's supposed to have a subtle texture through it to match plastic trim.

I picked up a satin black can for about $16 to try on my pillars - will let you know how it goes if you like?

Wow, that looks really nice.
Does it come in any other colours (light grey, beige, cream, etc)?
I'll be using a textured paint on my pillars too because they cannot be wrapped.

I was considering something with a bit more of a spatter or speckle to it though to match in with the trim already in the car.
Ideas?

Cheers, painting ended up being the only real option for this shape.

The bumper and trim paint comes in a few colours:
  • AB958 Light Grey - EA Falcon
  • AB978 Charcoal - VN Commodore
  • AB994 Satin Black (The product I used)
  • AB938 Light Grey
Depending on what colour you're after, you could go with a base of light grey and experiment with vinyl dye/paint to get an exact match.

Texture wise, I think you could produce a few different styles by either adding more layers (misting etc... to get more speckle) or adjusting the nozzle. Another way to alter the texture would be by building up and light sanding back, this is what I did to match the factory sail panel texture...

This is the finished product (I should have sanded and painted the trim rings, as the manufacturing imperfections really pop on black), after a light sand back with 2000g wet and dry...

The main reason I chose this paint was because of it's heat resistance and that it's flexible (almost like a very thin vinyl coat). Being bumper paint, I'm hoping it's also hard wearing (not that anything really touches the pillars)...
