hey guys i have 2 alpine mrd m1001 amps powering a type r sub each at 2ohm so 1000rms but with gains turned down and level turned down to -8db... now the sub it starting to smell so went to the location audio store...

one guy said its way over powered and should get the dual 2 ohm model subs to wire the amp at 4ohm so they get 500-600rms

but the other guy said that they tend to smell and should be perfectly fine with the 1000rms

opinions guys??? please help

thanks

My Type S 10's smell off 1k, they also smell off 300w each, I have come to the conclusion that it's just an Alpine thing

ok both subs are dead :( apparently was clipping until it got to -24 for the level when being tuned... what would be the main cause for it clipping so easierly??

when the car is off the voltage drop is down to bout 11.5-12v but when on it sits around 13.4v and they have the gains right and everything using their tool... and he said it could be the headunit or alternator?? this hurts alot im thinkin bout just ripping it all out and just puttin crap gear in as they seem to have less problems...

More subs plus less power = No worries:)
Dunno why so many people try running their gear on the ragged edge? Not gonna last long doing that. My2c:)

perhaps getting the dual 4ohm's as suggested would be an idea.. I don't know why they are popping from a tiny amount of power when the amp is the same rating power as the subs.. doesn't make much sense to me either.. :/

Did you actually clamp the amp to see how much was getting put to the sub? I would of just run one amp @ 1ohm. The subs rated at 600w rms and you had it taking 1000w rms even with the settings down it could of still been seeing to much power who knows man.

I checked the specs on crutchfield (only website that came up with some) and apparently it's only 2ohm stable...

Just because you have 1000w RMS per sub available it doesnt mean you are feeding them either 0 OR 1000w RMS. With careful gain settings applied you could have limited it to 500,600,700w RMS at full volume.

What sort of enclosure were you running them in as too large an enclosure or incorrectly tuned ported enclosures can drastically reduce power handling and kill subs easily.

I was feeding my 2x 500w RMS Orion XTR Pro 10s with power from 2x 1800w RMS monoblocks and for daily listening I had gains set rather mild so I had plenty of power on tap with a lot of headroom when I wanted to abuse them in SPL/DB sound offs. Never once did they break a sweat nor start smelling.

they said the reason they died was due to clipping which they clip really early so the other things shouldnt be an issue they think
