I'm looking at replacing the rear speakes in a VE commodore which already has Crescendo Opus 5's in the front. I only have the rears faded in a little as i like that it gives me more volume and i like the surrounded feeling of the sound but the standard rears start to distort etc when it reaches higher volumes. So i'm after opinions on a direct coaxial replacement that will tie in with the front speakers as i thought that if i have something with a totally different sound they might clash, would that be right? The rears will be run off the factory H/U as they are now. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I had just the fronts running for a while after the install was done but it wasn't loud enough when i cranked it and i do prefer to have some sound coming from the rear. I also have a Boston Acoustic G3 sub in the boot with both speakers and sub being run off Audison amps.

Any reasonable quality 6" coaxial (not 6.5".)

Seconded - and you don't have to spend mega bucks on them! They are only for rear fill after all.

Dare I say it - my reccomendation would be a cheapish pair of Pioneer 6" 2 ways. These seem to be a very sensitive speaker and do amazingly well in low power applications (running off a headunit etc). I think you would be quite impressed with the volume they can produce - for the price!

Ok thanks. Why a 6" and not a 6.5"? I thought i would have to spend a few hundred to get something decent. I was thinking Rockford Fosgate originally....

I'm assuming that a 6" will be a much easier fit in the rear door...just a hunch, I could be wrong.

^^^ Same as above, Just get something cheaper. Hell in my new install in the 34 my rears are just going to be $80 soundstreams, They will only be faded in on the odd chance i have someone in the back.

I was mainly concerned about the sound difference between a decent pair in the front and a cheap "fill" set in the rear but it sounds like it wont matter. Will it matter if its a 2 way or 3 way ?? Thanks for the help.

For the rear not enough to make a difference, if you can get some 3 Way Coaxials cheap, do it, if not no loss.

what would people choose out of the following few and why as the specifics & numbers dont mean alot to me -

Pioneer TSA1674R 3 way
Pioneer TSG1643R 2 way
Boston Acoustic SE65RC 2 way
Rockford Fosgate R165 2 way (prime series)

If those are what you have to chose from I would just say the Boston's.

FYI, 6.5" will not fit straight into Commodore doors front or rear. Only 6" drivers will fit without extra work.

I just narrowed it down to those based on what was recomended earlier with the Pioneers and because they were cheap & low rms watts. I'm open to suggestions up to prob $200.

Would it be as simple as pulling the plastic thing out and using a mdf spacer to fit anything bigger than a 6" speaker?

2 way / 3 way....you'd be very unlikely to notice any difference given they will be used primarily as rear fill. I'd be personally inclined to stick with 2 way coaxials.

As for the speaker mounts - you can practically make anything fit with a little custom fabrication ;)

Ah ok, i did notice that the Rockford's also come in a 6.75", would there be any benefit in choosing something like that?
