Gday guys, well i decided to pull my sub out of storage that ive had for a long time . And to my devestation it has a slight creeking type sound in it when u lightly press the cone down, goes down nice and smooth but just has that slight noise! and when u press the cone up its quite. Any ideas... voice coil still works.

Have you tried running it?

How was it stored - flat or sitting on an angle or verticle? Over time, the suspension (rubber surround and spider) may have sagged resulting in misalignment. May not be a big deal once you get it up and running.

Or perhaps you weren't pushing the cone perfectly inline.

:)

Havent tried running it yet,im looking around for a box to put it in. It was stored flat with the cone facing up. Hopefully with a bit of running in again it will sort itself out. Maybe it needs oiling ..lol

Try it before you put it in a box it will be easier to hear if something is wrong and it won't take as much power to get the cone moving a bit.

There's nothing wrong with it. Chances are you've pushed it passed it's Xmax limit, hence the sound.

like im looking at it again ,i lightly pushing the cone down near the roll surround and going all the way around the cone and there are some spots that are dead quite and other spots are creaky.

if u devide the cone into 4 quarters it seems the right hand bottom quarter is alot more noisy., and the quarter above it is dead quite. Seems like alignment/sag issue. Also u only need to press down about 1mm and u hear it.

Storing a subwoofer flat is the worst possible way to do it, as the weight of the moving mass gradually takes its toll on the spider mechanism - which stretches and sometimes warps in one direction. Once this has occured the woofer is essentially ruined I'm sorry to tell you.

Bugger me, so storing it sitting on its magnet has killed it... Farkit.. What would have been the best way to store it, i would have thought flat was the go. Sh@#$@

It's fine, though the only box option your got is a large ported design (2.75), in lieu to minimize the short excursion.
By the way, which DDDrive sub is it?

Just for idiots sake i hooked to a pissy home stereo in no box and it sounds as decent as 1 could with no box, to hard to tell tho coz its running full range. Might just wack it in a sealed box and give it a hammer and see how it sounds. If it farked its farked not cost effective to repair it if they even can..Model number is DDW-F30a.. simple mistake and knackered the sub f*&*K

yeh good luck finding a passive radiator or even another DDDRive sub. Might take the sub to total recoil and see if they can confirm the likely prognosis
