Hi guys, I've been looking at the MSO calendar after talk last year of an outing to see some "real" music, which never eventuated.
Would anyone be interested in coming along to see a show, which we could also turn into a dinner event for those that want to catch up, but not necessarily come to see the orchestra?
The possible dates and shows are as follows:

Friday, March 16, 8:00PM - 10:00PM
Melbourne Town Hall
Symphonie Fantastique
DUKAS The Sorcerer's Apprentice (from Disney's Fantasia)
STRAVINSKY Violin Concerto in D major
BERLIOZ Symphonie fantastique, Op.14 (one of the very best classic symphonies)
This concert includes two exuberant musical fantasies, conjured up from the imagination of their composers. We know The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Walt Disney’s magical Fantasia, and in the Symphonie Fantastique, we luxuriate in the composer’s indulgent contemplation of the ups and downs of love. Acting as a sorbet between them is Stravinsky’s sparkling Violin Concerto

Saturday, March 24, 6:30PM - 8:30PM
Melbourne Town Hall
Beethoven Violin Concerto
HAYDN Symphony No.6 in D major (Le Matin)
BEETHOVEN Violin Concerto in D major, Op.61
SHOSTAKOVICH Chamber Symphony Op 110a
Kolja Blacher is the complete musician, recognised around the world as a superb violinist and dynamic leader. In this concert, Blacher guides the orchestra through a musical journey encompassing the grace of Haydn’s early symphony, the intensity of
Shostakovich and the poetry of Beethoven’s glorious Violin Concerto.

Saturday, June 2, 2:00PM - 4:00PM
Melbourne Town Hall
The Planets: A Journey in Music and Film
MOZART Symphony No.41 in C major, K.551 (Jupiter)
HOLST The Planets
Through movies as diverse as Paradise Road and The Right Stuff, the music of The Planets has permeated our culture. Holst’s spectacular astrological journey is one of the most popular of all orchestral works, from the menacing tread of Mars, the Bringer of
War to the final movement, Neptune, the Mystic, in which we seem to be adrift in a world of stars and ice. Under dynamic young British conductor Alexander Shelley, this compelling program opens with Mozart’s final, sublime symphony.

All tix are around $60 for C-reserve, or $90 for B-reserve seating.
The Planets and Symphonie Fantastique are higihly recommended.

this is actually an awesome idea...

personally i don't dig the symphonie fantastique but the planets would be nice, gustav holst is little too "modern" for my tastes but still very enjoyable! or beethoven violin concerto sound good to me, i do prefer his piano concertos more, but his op61 is quite nice, and might make for a nice change...!?!

count me in!!

whats the major difference between reserve B and C seating...?

The only excuse for passive crossovers is their low cost. Their behavior changes with the signal level dependent dynamics of the drivers. They block the power amplifier from taking maximum control over the voice coil motion. They are a waste of time, if accuracy of reproduction is the goal.

i would personally like to go to the recital hall http://www.melbourne...tal.com.au/home
the amount of work thats gone into this building to make it sound perfect is amazing
QUOTE (RMA @ Feb 6 2010, 01:22 AM) My only regrets are:
Selling Fudd an amp (for a fraction of the real price) that had been returned by Autobarn Geelong which had been incorrectly used by AB Geelong and turned out to be faulty when Fudd started using it.
Whilst he was given a new amp after it could not be fixed, he never acknowledged any of the assistance given and bitches to this day about it.

^Spewing I didnt get to work on that project :(

Matt if you've never been to a classical music show I suggest seriously concidering it. I'm not the biggest fan (have to be in the mood) but seriously to see and hear it in real life its pretty spectacular.

Sparkeface I have indeed seen classical music concerts a number of times - quite stunning, however I just don't dig it enough to sit through it. Maybe in a few years' time. i also happened to see Gotan Project a couple of years ago at Hamer Hall. now THAT was a show!

Jazz is more my thing. I'll try and organise a great big band jazz gig a bit later in the year for us all :)
