In a VE ute with passive splits and a floor loaded sub behind the driver's seat, will TA really make a noticeable difference in SQ, being as there is such a big difference in distance between the mids and tweeters?

Yes, it will make a difference... although they will not time align perfectly like an active system it's not as bad as you think. It will still make a good improvement to imaging and staging.

I ran left vs right channel TA in my first cars and it worked really well in proportioning the stage correclty.
The car:
Honda RB3 Odyssey Lux - 24 bitness and 5ch bipolar Class A/B activeness
Source/processor:
Clarion HX-D2, Cleaved iP4
Amplification:Phoenix Gold Titanium 500.4 & 600.2, Alpine PDX4.150
Drivers:Audible Physics XR3M super wide band point source mid/tweeters, Seas Prestige L16RNSL midbasses, Infinity Perfect 10VQ sub, Fountek FR88EX wide band rears
Cables:Monster Cable XLN Pro, Monster Cable XLN S-16

The home:
Home two channel - Class A valve and ribbon goodness

Source:
Sony XA5ES (Burson discrete op amps x 6)

I believe that Sierra is using TA on his car, which is running 2 way passive, and it stages VERY nicely - one of the best MEA cars IMO :)

I'm using a mini DSP and it made a huge difference to mine. However it still cant solve all the problems. I am considering trying switching to full active to see if its any better. Failing that it will be just a good old position change.

The car : 1999 WRX
Pioneer DEHP7050BT

minidsp
MB Quartl Fronts
Kenwood amps
Kenwood Sub.
Does the job for now. Build in progress.

It's a compromise of course, like most things. If you were serious about running passive but time aligned, try and get the PLDs for tweeter and midbass on each side to be minimal. Then they're closer to being on the same delay plane, so TA will affect them more mutually.

Guess its easier to move a tweeter for a trial than make a switch to full active. But on the other side its less work to switch to full active on a permanent basis, as its just another cable run an a reprogram of the DSP. Moving the tweeters would require building something for them to live in. Weather that be a kick or a pillar.

When tuning do you apply TA before doing EQ or after.

Both. Did a basic setting by ear. Did some TA, a bit more EQ a bit more TA. Now I'll bust out the RTA and start all over again :fool:

Sorry. PLD = Path Length Difference. Ie. Your left midbass will be say 1.2 metres to your head, the left tweeter might be 1.6 metres to your head. You have a PLD of 0.4 metres. Trying to position speakers such that the PLD is minimal is useful active or passive. It's relative to the drivers on one side only however... ie minimise the PLD on the left, and the right sides... not necessarily PLDs between left and right.
