Hi. Long time since I have visited this great forum but I'm now returning for some advice. I have a dual cab D22 Navara that currently has dynamatted front doors with Alpine Type-R Components, however, somehow the tweeters died some time ago. I'm running the type-r's off channels 1 & 2 of an Option Audio OAH500 5 channel amp and channel 5 is powering a Polk Audio MM1240 DVC sub at 2ohm load. I have been offered a brand new set of Alpine DDL-RT17s for a very good price. I have been quite happy with the sound of the type-r's even without the tweeters but I haven't heard the DD Linears before. Is it worth upgrading to these? I've also been offered an Orion Cobalt CO6004 4 channel amp brand new for a great price. Would this amp be any better than the Option Audio I'm currently running?

Any advice would be great. I would hope to grab these tomorrow if the advice I receive from here is positive.

Thanks in advance.
James

imo id say the orion would sound a little cleaner than the oa perhaps more musical too...but you need to really judge with your ears ..its tour system afterall :)

Thanks for the reply sostok. I have just realised though that the orion amp isn't 2ohm stable when bridged and my amp is dual 4ohm so I'd be forced to run at 8ohm. I'm guessing I wouldn't get the ideal power out the amp at this load. So I might have to stick with the OA.

Is there any technical merit for this suggestion?

Option Audio offers 4 x 90WRMS at 4ohms plus 300WRMS x 1 at 2ohms (to suit the subwoofer you have - though you say 'dual 4ohm amp' I think you means sub).

Orion CO6004 offers 60WRMS x 4, while bridging provides 150WRMS into a 4ohm load or 120WRMS into an 8ohm load.

I see no circumstance under which the Orion amplifier would be preferable, 'cleaner' or 'more musical'. Old school Orion HCCA amplifier were built to a very high degree and forged Orion's reputation in the sound off arenas around the globe. The CO series have no common parts with these and are made to a much lower price and much lower grade in China - hence there's no merit in thinking they have any mystical SQ prperties I'm afraid.

No amplifier do...

If you were happy with the sound of the Type-Rs even when the tweeters were dead and not working, I don't think you'd be disappointed with any sort of speaker replacement/upgrade.
And as Damon has said, the Orion doesn't really suit your gear, so stick with the Option Audio for the amp.
