I was just searching through old posts and I found one that discussed the power handling of a speaker relative to the frequency.

Before I start, this is not a SQ thread, I understand that a lower midbass crossover helps blend the sub-bass into the front stage, I am simply curious about power and frequency.

I'm just curious to see if I high pass them at 80hz rather than 60 if I could run them slightly louder without risking damage. For example, I am to understand that playing at 90db at 60hz may use 125 watts RMS and use 4mm of excursion while playing at 100db at 80hz will also use 125 watts RMS and 4mm of excursion. Is this correct?

My reason for asking if that I am curious if a speaker can distort at 500hz but not at 100hz with the head units volume at the same level for both, is this possible?

the excursion may be a little less at the higher frequency, but yes.

it depends on the "break up" modes in the speaker, and the enclosure (or lack of).

also the speakers Fs will partly protect it as the impedance rises you will get less power from the amplifier.
