Im just in the process of ordering some dynamat and Im happy to build my own sub box but Id prefer not to spend more than $500 on speakers/sub as the car isn't worth too much more than that

I haven't been on here for since it was Car Audio Australia and haven't had a system in a car for ages so I'm a bit out of the loop. I'm looking for a basic setup for my daily driver a 1994 Corolla Sprinter. I already have a Alpine 9857 and have an older Alpine V-Power 4x50W amp lying around and I was wondering if anyone could suggest some splits and a 10inch sub so I could enjoy some decent music on the way to work rather than the 20year old stock speakers.

Back in the day I would have grabbed some of the jaycar response gear but it doesnt seem to be around anymore

Welcome back I guess!
Damon's review of $300ish splits may give you some ideas: http://www.mobileele...ponents_review/
There's reviews of subs too in that section (mostly 12" subs, but there'll be 10" versions). With a subwoofer budget of around $200, maybe look into Alpine Type-S, Pioneer TS-W258, JL Audio 10W1v2, etc. All very decent gear. If you have restrictions on how big a subbox you want, that may limit your choice.

Cheers for the help... there is an audio shop near me which has those hertz splits in the article on special so I will go have a look at those when im in town. Will have to find somewhere that stocks the crescendo speakers but the sub doesn't sound like it will suit the type of music I listen too (alternative/metal mostly)

Since you listen to alternative, / metal music, you would be happy with a single 10 inch woofer in your car but if you want to go louder, then get a 12 inch. Plenty of stuff in the market and in the MEA F/S thread.
