Sub resistance & Sound qualitysubs; wiring

I have a pair of Alpine SWS-1043, 4 ohm dual coil subs, I have wired them coils in parallel, subs in parallel to get 1 ohm effective resistance. The other option I had was to wire the coils in series and the subs in parallel to get 4 ohm total resistance.
My question is , does wiring them for 4 ohms effect the damping of the speaker as opposed to wiring for a 1 ohm resistance ? - if so how does this manifest itself sound wise ?
My reason for wiring as 1 ohm, is so that I do not need as large a power output from a sub compared to 4 ohm set up. (Subs are mounted in a 2 chamber , 1 cu.ft per chamber sealed enclosure).
I anticipate using a 1 ohm rated monoblock, stable at 1 ohm and rated around 400-600 w. The speakers are supposedly rated at 300 w each rms.
