Hi guys I have been out of the game for a few years now, so much has changed and with quite a few companies changing their model lineup I'm a bit stuck with choice and being limited to what I can actually hear in soundboards in WA.

Basically I'm just after a fairly simple front stage for my XH panel van daily driver/parts carrier. While sound quality is one of the requirements it's not the main priority. I like to listen to all kinds of music and I like to listen to it fairly loud. I'm limited with height in the doors being that the XH uses crappy XF doors, so I'm going to go for a pair of 5.25"s in a simple build out, just for more output, I will be using an Audison LRX4.5 for the front stage, most likely passive, the rest of the system will consist off an Alpine INA-900 and PXA processor, sub stage is a DD 9515 in a nice large deep tuned enclosure off around 4000wrms, the car will cop the usual double layer Dynamat treatment so it has a good environment. As it's just a daily driver I am not after anything massive or complicated just something I can throw music in and listen to!

My budget for fronts is around $1000 for the two pairs, maybe plus or minus $100 or so.... There is not a great selection of gear around my way so I was hoping to get some advice as to what is 'good' these days, I want something that is not overly bright or dynamic so MB Quart etc. is way out of the equation, although Focal are a little bright I have access to some entry level Focals from a local shop for around $300 a pair but I was to see what else is available and recommended by you guys, I'm happy to buy online or through a shop in WA, I just don't want to pay through the nose.

Keen to hear back

Cheers

Mike

famous last words...? lol

honestly, in 5.25" splits i'm not 100% sure, as i haven't played around a tonne with them... however one of my favorite alrounder speakers for loud/sq stuff, as well as being great bang for buck, are the Morel Tempo's... last car i put them in was a VT wagon off a 4x 150rms 4ch, just a single pair happily kept up clearly with 146db @ 36hz of sub bass... nothing amazing, but i would consider that reasonable daily louds...

the Tempo's also come in a 5" (5.25" but for some reason morel don't add that extra bit on their sizings...?)

i'd say that would be a good place to start? no doubt others will have different suggestions, but i'm a big fan of them...

Boston SR50 come to mind as being a good set of clear/loud speakers.
You could probably get 2 sets of DLS UP5i splits for $1000.
Hertz HSK130 - might be bright out of the box, but the crossover has 3 attenuation levels for the tweeters I believe.
Polk MM5251 - not really a common choice, but every time I've heard Polk car speakers I've always been impressed at performance/cost.
Hybrid Audio also have their 'Imagine' series which do a 5.25" split set for around $500/pr.

What about Ant's horns. They will keep up with the sub choice. You could get them and a set of punchy mids and they would slam… and handle anything you throw at them.

The XH dash should suit the horns nicely.

In the past the Morels I listened to were quite a nice sounding speaker, I'm not sure who deals in Morel in WA?

I have access to DLS and from what I remember they were a pretty good company, might be worth a look?

The shop I went to recommended the imagine series from Hybrid Audio, but I've never had much experience with them, are they a good brand?

What about Ant's horns.

Horns have always been on my want list for years but I think it may be a little too much setup work for this car, but thanks for the suggestion mate

DLS are still one of the better rbands, up there with Morel, Focal, Dynaudio and Crescendo (among others).

Hybrid Audio are a relatively new manufacturer, led by Scott Buwalda who started it from ground up simply because he had a passion and desire to make great speakers for SQ enthusiasts.
IMO the 'Imagine' series present pretty good value.

If it were me, I would put Boston, DLS and Hertz at the top of my shortlist, however it would be great to get out and listen to all the speakers to see which you like best. Just remember the tweeter attenuation if the speakers have them. Can make a big difference between hating and liking a set of speakers.

I vote for DLS UP5, not bad midbass for a 5.25", nice build quality, good midrange and highs but best of all is the crossovers. They make passives sound really, really nice.

Thanks guys, after doing a little more research the DLS are looking promising, I haven't had much experience with DLS and they look like nice speakers.

Will let ya know how I go

Maybe look at some of the pro audio drivers from companys like eminence etc for loud and clear sound if your wanting it to keep up with 4kw of 9515 sub stage?

5.25" pro audio drivers are PURELY midrange. You'd have a massive hole in the midbass/lower midrange if you're teaming a 9515 with 5.25" pro audio speakers.

hey charger I used alpine ddlinear, crescendo opus (can't remember what one they were about $800), focal krx2 and then went to hybrid audio legatia series in the same car and the hybrid audio were the best, if you wanted to run one set of speakers maybe look at the clarus series they retail for $829.00.

That's right, I'm after just a simple clean sound. The single 9515 shouldn't be that crazy, just a nice deep sub stage

i'll seconds some DLS, i did a pair in a mates VH sedan, nothing crazy, but i was definitely impressed, not only by the quality but the output as well, maybe not quite as well suited to gettin loud, but we got more than enough volume from them, and they really did sound fantastic whilst doing so, very much an "enjoooyable" kind of quality, i've heard plenty of speakers which sound great, but they're not always "enjoyable", i found the DLS to be very fun to listen to! especially once they bedded in nicely... they are however, quite "sharp" strait out of the box...

Scan-speak?

I'm having trouble copy-pasting the link on my phone for some reason, but if you go to www.madisound.com and search for 820012, you should find it.

Might work out a bit much though.
