When not doing car audio.....

Well, always fidling with something right?... cars, motorbikes, chasing tail and now home HiFi.

These fullrange speakers were only just finished tonight 30/3/12. There's about 160hrs in these, but I really took my time.
I pre-burnt in the Planet10 HiFi eNabled Fe126's so I could listen pretty much right away.
Their not 100% done, they need binding posts, feet and a sub-stage that can keep up.
But Im sold on folded horn designs, eNabled speakers and true point sourcing you can only really get at this moment from full range set ups...
any way enough blab on with the pictures.

Check & Preping

Staining .... using readily available CABOTS water based products. **NOTE deliberately stayed away from a sanding sealer. (reason for it) knowing that I would need to sand between coats.

more stain... you can see how the hours just rack up in this build. But, theres the joy in the build.
Each coat is brushed on, allowed to weep in and then rubed down. Light 240'd between each coat.

Construction... note, melamine specific glue supplied by cabinet maker friend. Much went into its choice. Rather than traditional PVC or Poly.

Listening room.... + very cold Vodka's all round please! 90% done, need feet/wheels and a good vac of the rug.
Then looking at Peachtree NOVA amplification upgrade.

hahaha very nearly woke my 2 year old in the next room by laughing just now.
I've never heard much about those speakers, but home hifi isnt really something ive delved into at all either.
I've got a logitech 5.1 that i got for $59 on sale at EB Games set up on my tv and im happy enough with that lol.

Mate, if you ever need candid advice, happy to steer you in a non biast way. Just let me know, once you heard real HiFi you will understand why it can be so rewarding!

I built those speakers myself all for under $850, everything you saw inclusive and they blow speakers worth $$$$'s more out of the water. But their not for everyone.

Just one of those things, something that sounds amazing to one person can sound crap to someone else.

I pretty much only have wiggles and bananas in pajamas and kids junk on the tv, if he is in bed im usually playing with my car (again) so a decent hifi would be wasted on me

they look like theyre worth a fortune more than $850 too

Damn it Syd, they look good, makes me want to hurry up and get my various full range projects running.. any circuitry to try and iron out a bit of the mid-upper response? From memory there are a couple of peaks in regions that i personally am rather sensitive to..

Although i believe eNabling is supposed to help with a few of these short comings... But i wont get into that with you

From the short 4 hour listening session last night, these don't really need anything boosted or cut right now. They surpass my Energy C5's and my old Alesis Monitors in terms of straight, clean nonfatiguing sound. They do need to be set up in a FAST config though. (subwoofer assisted)
Maybe after a few more hours.... I can tell better. But right now, they beat any other reference I have.

VERY nice work there, Chris! Always wanted to muck around with a pair of 8" full range speakers. I'm inclinded to do open baffle for the sake of a change, but this looks classy.

And what a match between the speakers and the rug, hey! :{P

Nice Chris, Looking a lot better finished than when I last saw them. And those enabled drivers are just pure sex in person, very nice mate, enjoy them.

What are your thoughts on a sub stage to keep up. I would think IB would be the best match, but not really possible in your place. Maybe isobaric to keep vibrations down and box size small?

@Tiger/Shiz - very much convinced on the horn loaded full range. The colours of stain I porpusely chose to go with my rug.

@James - mate done! haha! we can make a w/end of it.... we can compare these to my Energy's and then also to my next project!

@Ant - sub stage at this moment im thinking BIG paper cone 18" in a sealed enclosure. I want speed/punch and bottom end. A big 18" that barely moves is ideal.

Likewise bobo, I'm very suprised at how composed and how much frequency range these cheap speaker cover. Plus with a single driver on either side Im getting closer to ideal stereo. Admitedly its still compramised, but certainly the best sounding speakers I've ever built, car or home.

Horn loaded sub bass! What random drivers do you have around the place?

Also, any considerations to flush mounting drivers?

I've always had a fetish for single driver TL speakers - mostly because true folded horn designs are our of my comfort and capability zone to DIY. But the ones I've heard have always sounded AMAZING. I'm sure you will be very happy with these for some time.

@ryzaa- haha, If I had the room I would put a TH sub, but I don't think its necessary. There's very little music I listen to that has that info down there. But there is merit in that I will also be setting up a Home theatre soon (better than what I have now) and a killer sub stage would be good for this. Still thinking a very simple 18" in a sealed box. **edit - just saw this and Im freaking out now. http://www.diyaudio....t-horn-sub.html

As for other drivers, well theres all sorts of Dyn's, Peerles/Vifas, Beymas, Hybrid Audio, Responce, EV, Peavy's, Polk Audios. But i really have more amps the anything else. Really, too many amps.

@Sparks - welcome to have a listen. pls bring CD's I have no form of compression listening. Hell my CD player wont even play MP3's.

I have the plans for the Gjallerhorn if you can find it.. its probably a tad bigger then a good large sealed box for an 18, built for an LMS Ultra 18, pretty flat from 15hz-60hz or so at stupid efficiency
Would be perfect!
