Hi guys,

Need your advice.

I am narrowing down my speaker choices to either Hertz HSK 165 + HX300D or Image Dynamics XS 65 + IDQ V3 12. PricIng will be line-ball either way and is not a consideration.

Will be running on 150W RMS per channel for front stage and 600W at 2 ohm for subwoofer. Car is a small hatch and mainly for musical use with a focus on SQ - some 80s rock, a lot of musical female vocals.

I am hamstrung because the IDQ seems to have a pretty good rep but I've not been able to audition them in person. On the other hand, I have listened to the Hertz speakers and was pretty happy with them, but not sure if I can set the sub up to be as tight and tonal as I would want, and don't want to sell myself short if the ID's are clearly the better choice.

Any advice? What would Jesus do?

I could do, I suppose it's just OCD that would stand in my way. Do you think tonal balance would be complementary and so forth?

I didn't like the IDQs I've heard. I'd go for the Hertz gear.

What didn't you like about them?

The ID's are a proven SQ sub.
I would suggest you try to listen to as many brands/models within your price range as you can.
Look for reviews and Internet search.

I had an ID10, then upgraded to and IDQ and I have an IDMAX sitting on my floor...I personally love the sound the ID subs make. Very smooth sub when in the right box.

Very big fan of the IDQ however, can thump when it needs to and can be the silky smooth sound too!

Thanks Andy, the last 6 weeks have been an arduous adventure trying to get some good advice and find speakers to demo. It's been challenging to say the least.

Finally I have picked a front stage different to both of the above and have rolled the dice on said Internet reviews and some advice rather than a seemingly impossible 'listen in person' test.

Fingers crossed!

(Will probably still go with an IDQ though. Turns out that the dual coil Hertz HX subwoofer has different TS specs than the single coil one and won't suit my enclosure as well as I thought.)

I used to have the XS65's and I didn't like them at all. I like a forward midrange but they were ridiculous, very bright top end too. Almost shrill.
