Vehicle: VT Calais

I've been having some electrical issues with my car lately and just booked it into the mechanic for a scan before heading to the auto elecs. The mechanic has informed me that my wiring job at the battery has fried my ABS module. What I did when I installed the aftermarket + battery terminal was snip off all the cables that originally connected to the + terminal (I think it was just the one), then rewired it straight to a distro block.

I didn't think this would be an issue but then again I'm no 12v expert. The mechanic said it had been getting too much current or something along those lines. I'm picking the car up this arvo and will get more information out of him then.

Basically I'm wondering how do people deal with the stock wiring when they upgrade? Is there any tricks or tips that could have stopped my ABS module from 'frying'?

VTs still have fusible links at the battery, very primitive technology but if you shortened or cut them that may be what he was talking about.

I tried to work with the palm of the factory terminal when I did my VX, might be a bit tricky to spot but here's a photo.

Yea in hindsight thats not a bad idea. If I had of known there was more to the palm then just conductive metal I would have done this myself. I would have it lying around somewhere in one of my "bits of my car I've pulled out but will probably need later" box.

If I can find it, solder it straight onto where i originally snipped it, then somehow connect it back to the + cable. This should technically resolve the issue. Unless there is an alternative to the fusible links I can buy and put inline?

I might just take it to the auto elecs and see what they can do in terms of salvaging it. Probably the safer option.

If you've got a good auto electrician, I'd let them sort it out. It's too hard to say over the internet.

Just got the car back from the mechanic who had replaced the ABS module. Everything seems to be working fine now, the amps have miraculously come back to life too thank god (for anyone who didn't know, they had all mysteriously died for an unknown reason, I posted about this a few days ago in general) and I have no idea why they would have anything to do with the ABS module, car electrics seriously confuses me sometimes.

But basically he told me not only could it be an issue cutting the fusible links but also running high current cable so close to the ABS and BC modules can mess with the fine electronics, he said "whoever did this had no idea what they were doing with regard to the fine electronics" (lol, me). However, I can see in the above pic Big Valven you have run it right over the top with what I assume are no problems whatsoever.

The car is booked into the auto elecs on Tuesday, and along with maybe getting my problem fixed, I'll probably get drilled for running cables everywhere innapropriate.

So any info on this topic would be hugely appreciated, just so I have a basic idea of what I may have done wrong, and to help me understand where the auto elecs will be coming from on Tuesday so I feel more comfortable throwing money at them.

Like Big Valven said it is a bit hard to comment on these types of things over the net, but if anyone has had similar problems or are 12v experts and have some knowledge on the subject I would love to know.

Cheers.

Does any of this relate to the VE? I am hoping to get mine sorted out next week, and don't really want to come across any unexpected problem like this.

This is not relevant to VE.

Where did you get the battery related gear from!?

For anyone interested, the auto elecs have looked at the car and decided that the high current power cable running so close to the fine electronic components in and around the ABS module was the cause for the problem. All he did was re-route the main positive cable around the ABS module and left everything else as it was.

I'm surprised no one else has had a similar problem, there are alot of people out there with cars similar to mine and generally the power cable will run past these electrical components. Time will tell if the problem re-occurs I guess, although I don't really want to have to replace the ABS module again it wasn't the cheapest thing in the world.

I've had all sorts of power cables running around my ABS module, in my VY without an issue. I never hear of anyone else with a similar problem, might be an isolated incident.

Yep, i used to have my main power cable ziptied to the ABS loom, never had an issue.
