Bob is no longer cool :P

piss off the MD's and use the XT's! sooo nice
QUOTE (RMA @ Feb 6 2010, 01:22 AM) My only regrets are:
Selling Fudd an amp (for a fraction of the real price) that had been returned by Autobarn Geelong which had been incorrectly used by AB Geelong and turned out to be faulty when Fudd started using it.
Whilst he was given a new amp after it could not be fixed, he never acknowledged any of the assistance given and bitches to this day about it.

I must agree with the Fuddweiser on this one - XT25's are bloody nice tweeters!

Also worth checking out the SB Acosutics SB29's, which are also a 'ring' type tweeter of sorts and sound a lot like the XT25's. They are slightly more expensive then the Vifas, but they also have slightly better performance - their low end performance in particular is better, with distortion levelsat 2.5khz being comparable to the XT25s at 3khz.

They also don't have a daft looking penis sticking out of the middle :P

if you're going for a large format tweeter like the XT, then the air-circ is my next choice.
I never liked the xt25's much myself.

AirCirc is definately a better tweeter then the XT25, but you pay for it - it's about 4x-5x the price.

XT25 is a brilliant tweeter and absolutely untouchable for the price, but it's quite sensitive to correct setup - it really needs to be crossed over high in a 3-way system for best results. From our own comparison testing, we found that it's not until about 3khz @ 18dB that it starts to really sound it's best - any lower or shallower with tha slope, and it still does show signs of struggle.

The SB29 is a little easier to work with - it's moe sensitive then the XT25 (which is pretty sensitive as it is), and starts to sound quite clean once the crossover gets up to around 2.5khz @ 18dB. At 3khz it sound amazing, and very close to the AirCirc.

The Scan Illuminator is probably the next step up in terms of price vs perfomance. These have recently halved in price, so you can get them here for about $300 / pair. Still about 3x the price of the XT25 and 2x the price of the SB29s, but if you need to cross lower then 3khz it's definatel worth it. They can cross at 2khz @ 18dB quite comfortable, and 2.5khz is absolutely effortless. Overall performance is almost identical to the Aircirc (which they are based on), only they have the small flange. These are slightly more compact then both the XT25 no and SB29 neo, and wihle the former two have a plastic flange+chamber, the Illuminator is all-metal in it's construction - the build quality is outstanding.

AirCirc is pretty much exclusively for those who are restricted to running 2-way. It's a full size tweeter, but is easier to mount then most of it's type because the unique 'AirCirc' motor structure is extremely shallow - mounting depth is smaller then some small format neo tweeters. This tweeter form 2.5khz upwards provides minimal benefit over the Illuminator - it's great strength is it's ability to cross over at 2khz @ 18dB comfortably, making it excellent for 2-way car systems where the off-axis midwoofer will typically struggle to play much above 2khz. These, you're looking at about $500 a pair, so they are definately not cheap - if you can get away with a 2.5k crossove then the Illumnator makes a lot more sense.

Do not run the XT25's (or SB29's) off the factory Dyn crossover!! Or at least I'd strongly recommend against it.

Check out a whole bunch of diferent tweeters, and try to find two which have almost identical impedance curves and sensitivity - it's EXCEPTIONALLY rare. Impedance curves will likely be completely different and even if it's simiar the sensitivity will likely be out by several dB - poor impedance matching can cause crossover frequencies quite dramatically, and poor sensitvity matching can lead to a system which is far too bright (or the opposite).

The SB29's are one of the most sensitive dome tweeters I've come accross, and will need quite a bit of extra attenuation compared to most other tweeters - I had to bring them down an extra 2dB-3dB when I connected them in place of the Illuminators. Chucked into most factory passives, they're going to be a good couple of dB too loud.

I'm not sure about which driver you were asking about (XT25 or SB29), but in either case I'd highly recommend not hooking them up via the Dyn passives. I'd suggest you either run custom (or modified) passives, or to go active - unless you can get someone with a lot of crossover experience to confirm for you 100% that they will suit the crossover.

Then they are out of the question. As said earlier, I am after a direct replacement - I don't have the passion or the time to muck around with that kind of stuff any more. Fiddling with car audio bores me lol.
