no idea about tonal differences but they are a lot more efficient when unclipped vs a class a/b amp.

power vs $$$ class d is a winner over class a/b everytime.

class D can be digital or analog. not both. class D analog is far more common.
analog: analog input signal, analog control. output transistors operate only in the fully on or fully off position, hence the digital interpretation, however, not digital.
digital: power stage is switched by a digital control system.

finally some one got it right, and there is no ADC in a class D amp
class d amps are analogue, there just non-linear. unlike convertional class A or B.
why are they called class-d then? is there not digital
well it was the next availavle letter after class-c amps.
