ok, so just coz i'm bored and was curious, i decided to put together a list of my *sensible* dream sq system.
by sensible, i mean still sticking to components that wouldnt leave me with a third-world country sized debt.
heres the list:

Source:
Alpine CDA-9853R ($899), or
Clarion HX-D2 ($1999)

Tweeters:
Morel SUPREMO ($675pr),
Hiquphon OWII ($235ea, $470pr)), or
Scanspeak S2905/970000 ($295.45ea, $600pr)

Woofers:
Image Dynamics CX62 ($449pr), or
Morel Elate6 ($513pr)

Crossovers:
Morel MX22 ($200pr)

Two-Channel Amplifier:
Alpine MRV-T420 (2x110wrms, $699),
Digital Designs C2 (2x150wrms, $599), or
Boston GT22 (2x75wrms $699)

Subwoofer:
Boston G512-44 ($799), or
Diamond Audio TDX12 ($1090)

Monoblock Amplifier:
Vibe MB3 (1x500wrms, $824), or
Alpine MRD-M605 (1x600wrms@2ohm, $799)

i originally wanted the elate9 woofers, but looking at their response curves, it would have meant i would need a midrange driver for any tweeter other than the supremo, so too restrictive and decided to go with the elate6 or id cx62 instead
so all up, a system would come to around $4000...unless i went with the hx-d2 of course! ;)
then theres the cost of install which would be at least $1000 incl. SD.

yikes!!!

interested to hear what other peoples' dream systems consist of.
any opinions or question welcome.

I'd go with our C4 over the C2 for the front end, it allows you to go active for the front end, giving 2x75 and tweeters and 2x150W for mids.

Use the C2 for sub instead.

I just did a new Golf GTi for a mate, using the Scanspeak 13M8640-00 mids. They say 2.5" but they look more like 4s. They were delicious!

I think out of your entire list, the amplifiers are the weakest link.

I've just acquired all the equipment for my dream installation. Keeping it under wraps til it has been fitted, but I'm sure it will raise a few eyebrows. Luckily I'm my own CFO

the amps admittedly are a little bit of a weak link, but i highly doubt there would be any audible sq deficiency.
and as i said, it was my dream system, without going overboard on the prices.
so i couldnt get the tru-tech or zapco amps i would really like, but i still think with the right install, my above list options would give me an ultimate car audio experience

if your going for different brand tweeters/mid's i would get an active xover than a passive.

it sounds like you are going a bit of a showy install so i would get the same amps all round, looks nice :D as pete said your amp's are the weekest link there, you could get some nice amp's second hand if your willing to go that way..

Selling Fudd an amp (for a fraction of the real price) that had been returned by Autobarn Geelong which had been incorrectly used by AB Geelong and turned out to be faulty when Fudd started using it.
Whilst he was given a new amp after it could not be fixed, he never acknowledged any of the assistance given and bitches to this day about it.

ok people, i think i need to clarify...
this is my dream system, i am not in the process of trying to acquire these components (moving out of home while not having full time employment means i wont be having spare cash lying around for quite a while)

the point of this exercise was for people to list their dream systems so we can all be introduced to new/exotic components, and share ideas/comments about our own or others systems.

one question i do have about my own list is:
has anyone had any experience with the hiquphon tweeters? i listed them after some research and intend to get a listen to some possibly from speakerbits in footscray (only place i could find them in vic), but would like to hear anyone's opinions on them

dream system (which im slowly getting together)

source

so far its the alpine IVA - D310E + PXA - H701 for all the goodies (may or may not actually get this for source)

front stage

morel/rainbow. mixture of everything here, profi vanadium tweet and power driver with a morel midbass

sub

RE XXX 12" or Diamond TDX 12"

amps

tru tech hammer aswell as a Tru Tech 2ch and 4 ch.

thats pretty much wat im aimin @, but seein as i am also moving out of home + poor uni student + only able to work properly during holidays = slow acquisition of components. but im getting there :D
Please note: Any technical discussion of a topic by myself implies that your ears will be the ultimate measurement and that enjoyment of a system is the ultimate goal!

Also, chances are what I am talking about is absolute rubbish and that the reader shall derive his own conclusions from the above comments!

If we tripled the price of the amps would that make them more attractive to the "SQ purist" :)

In Rob's Golf I ran two C4s. 2x75W to the tweeters, 2x75W to the mids, 2x150W to the midbass and 1x500W to the single 10" woofer. All active using the amp's on board crossovers.

The thing is squeaky clean, has one of the highest and widest stages I've ever heard and the whole lot only cost around $4000.

Wow, we agree! First I agree with Marc now you!

Spyne, you don't need better brands just more power. And go second hand route, pre-loved is more rewarding in the long run. If you can't find what you want then wait, and save for what you DO want.

Compromise just leaves you regretting what could have been.

Hey Rob do you mean the Digital Drive series Velodyne subs for home use? Or do/have velodyne ever made subs specifically for car audio?
Interested to know

The C2 he was talking about first was just tested to make 2x280Wrms into 4 ohms.

they used to make the DF (distortion free) series for cars a few years ago, quite expensive and not many were sold so they pulled them out of the market.

have a look here at the user manual http://velodyne.com/velodyne/products/manuals/DF-10_sc.pdf

HEAD UNIT: current alpine 9853

FRONT STAGE: soon to be had Morel elate with supremo...

FRONT AMPS: RF P4004 bridged for 200 watts a side for woofers and DD C2 for supremos

SUB: DD 9112

SUB AMP: DD M1

Admittedly the 9112 probably isnt the perfect choice for a stellar sq setup, but i figure, when set up properly and tuned well, itll give me a nice kick in the bum wen i want to crank it, but also sound pretty much just as good as MOST other subs at lower volumes...

PS. hopefully this will all be complete by mid year....
