I have just found the manufacturer (jaycar) specs for my sub, and also used the carstereo.com calculator to find the correct box size. They both suggest a box that is nearly half the size of my current box (I didn't build the current one, btw). At the moment the sub is a little boomy, but mostly its ok... Am I going to notice a worthwhile improvement putting it in a smaller box?

probly make it more boomy.

get a few phone book's or bricks (anything solid) and put them in there to lower the internal volume and see how it sounds.

Selling Fudd an amp (for a fraction of the real price) that had been returned by Autobarn Geelong which had been incorrectly used by AB Geelong and turned out to be faulty when Fudd started using it.
Whilst he was given a new amp after it could not be fixed, he never acknowledged any of the assistance given and bitches to this day about it.

 I don't think a smaller box would make it more boomy.

As said, chuck some blocks of timber into your box and screw it down. The difference will be quite noticeable.

Yeah I would have thought a smaller box would be LESS boomy... Thats what all the sub articles I read say... I'll try the phone books though - that'll tell me pretty quickly.

If the box is too small, then the resonant frequency will be too high, causing a dramatic decrease in efficiency and a peaking response from the sub

stazed i guess you have never built many sub box's in your illustrious career in car audio?

it depends how you define boomy :)

My Hertz was in a 1.5cu ft box..... timber was screwed in to lower it to 0.9cu ft.... response was tighter and less boomy.

Maybe my ears lied to me.

Well! I put two phone books in my box, and its SOO much cleaner and less boomy now. Think I'll invest in the MDF to make the correct size box on the weekend!

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA Pay that one killaklown  The box is pretty dodge anyway - 12mm MDF, and ported. I'd rather have a decent box than try to patch up this one :)

Boomy usually is used to describe a peaky sound, normally from 50-70Hz. Small boxes tend to generate this kind of response.

Perhaps by boomy the author of this thread meant "thick" or an over exaggeration of lower frequencies, which can be caused by too large a box.

Yes, that is what the author meant DD Phil :P Kinda muddy, and not distinct, and generally 'too much'.
