I'd contest that. Great speakers are much, much more important than great amps. Get what you can afford, worry about the amps last...but go something half-decent at least ;)

The difference between a "fantastic" amp and an "Average" amp might be as little as 10%, in outright sound quality. Noticeable, perhaps, but not staggering. at least, theres a very bad "Value for money" aspect. for every % up, you pay a premium.

The difference between a "fantastic" set of speakers, and a "Average" set of speakers, can be ...staggering.

sure, you want both to be great, but speakers do take priority :)

I know your only trying to make a point..

For an amplifier to make a 10% difference the only way I know of is to drive it into clipping.

most amplifiers only have the current capacity to put out 20-30% more power then they are rated for at nominal load....
this causes us to hit a 'wall' where current limiting in the psu causes voltage sag and drives THD through the roof during peak demands with no gain in output power.

just trying to help..

But I agree whole heartedly with your statement about speakers. :yahoo:

Im pretty sure he was referring to sound quality and not output power. Driving an amp into clipping isn't how I listen to my music anyway.

Besides the fact that it's hard to measure a 10% difference in sound quality. I would agree with the fact that speakers should be number 1 priority, no amp can make crap speakers sound good.

Of course there's only so far you can go with an inferior amp, but speakers will be the biggest determinant in how your car sounds above everything else. Considering even the cheapest source units will still produce an 'ok' sound.
