Hey fellahs,

It's time to upgrade my system to get a decent SQ sound. My best mate got 2nd in 0-600W at the 'nats Sound Off for his JVC DVD HU, 4xAlpine Type-S, 3 x Lanzaar subs, Response 4x100 & Pioneer 2 x 75(?) Amps (Some of you may know 'concorde'). Obviously it would be nice to out-do him, so I was wondering how you reckon the below would sound in a MY05 Impreza:

Installed

• HU: JVC KD-AV7008 7" In-dash DVD Player

Stage 1

• Fronts: Hertz Hi Energy HKS 165 6.5" Splits 125W ($360)
  
• Front Amp: Audison SRx 2S ($570) - running at 2x180W@4ohm
  
• Wiring: Aerpro ($150)
  
• Deadening: DFQ ($150) - front doors only

Stage 2

• Sub: Hertz Hi Energy HX300D 4ohm-DVC 600W ($397) - set for 2ohm load
  
• Sub Amp: Audison LRx 1.4 ($600) - running at 1x650W@2ohm
  
• Sub Box: Custom MDF to spec ($150) - home-made jobby
  
• Deadening: DFQ ($250) - boot

How do you guys think this would sound? Any suggested replacements? Prices for wiring and deadening are just guesstimates.

I've done a few installs myself, including the current HU, and have a few mates that aren't too shabby at it, so I don't think a self-install would be too much of a problem

Sounds like an alright plan. Just 2 comments:
Install is 50% of the sound (ok, some say 90% blah blah...) so play around with speaker position, dont know much about the deck but if it doesnt have time alignment or eq then speaker position becomes just that bit more important, since you cant tweak out those last little gremlins.
Also Hertz speakers are nice, but the HSK's tweeters are a bit weak in my opinion (SQ, not volume wise). Spend more on your front speakers, even if you have to cut back on amp and sub choices. An average sub in the right box will sound ok, average speakers sound, well, average. Go either a notch up in the Hertz range (if your keen to stick with those brands) or look at a few other options. With your overall budget I'd be trying to leave $600 for the speakers.

Would Boston SL60s do, or should I splurge on some Dyn 220 Mk2s?

Since I'll have to cut back, I assume I would be better off keeping a good amp to run the splits, and go cheaper amp and cheaper sub?

Try and have a listen to some, after all its going to be your ears sitting with them for the next few hundred hours.

Personally, Dynaudio, CDT, Bostons, Morel and many others are worth a listen. If 220's float your boat, then check out the FS forums. $500 for near new here:

how about the audison LRx2.4 $699 instead of the SRx one?

and i don't have any details of the LRx1.4. this is a monobloc i presume? not listed on the pricelist.

but granted, some better splits will yield an improvement over changing the SRx2S to the LRx2.4. mind you, the SRx2 would be quite adequate as it offers useful power; so if you want to save money there, and don't listen to earpiercing volumes, the smaller, cheaper amp would suffice. this could allow you to buy some dyn's instead.

I've had a word to Marty @ FHRX, and apparently LRx 1.1K is the new version of the 1.4, or something like that

The more I look into this, the more I grumble at my low budget

I'm gonna do a heap more reading up over the weekend (hopefully), and may update my wish list

One thought:
What about a 4 channel amp for now, using rear channels bridged for sub (maybe get a SVC version). It means later you could add a mono, and use the 4 chan to run a fancy (3 way semi-active or 2 way active) front stage. Of course, Dyn's love power, but for an sq comp it is a bit less of an issue, and decent 4x75 amps are fairly common for reasonable prices.
