So we established a high quality 12" most likely an IDMAX or G5, with plenty of "Clean" power, in a "proper" install possibly ported.

I am going to be doing the install myself, a simple 18mm MDF irregular sided box of appropriate volume. What more is there? Were you simply taking about volume & positioning, or is there something else I'm missing?

I just don't wanna invest the dollars till I have the whole story sorted & can buy the appropriate gear.

*cough* oz audio *cough*

sorry had to throw it in there :D
QUOTE (RMA @ Feb 6 2010, 01:22 AM) My only regrets are:
Selling Fudd an amp (for a fraction of the real price) that had been returned by Autobarn Geelong which had been incorrectly used by AB Geelong and turned out to be faulty when Fudd started using it.
Whilst he was given a new amp after it could not be fixed, he never acknowledged any of the assistance given and bitches to this day about it.

Have you heard the subs you are interested in? Its really easy to get a sealed box sounding fantastic, especially with subs which were initially designed to be run in a sealed enclosure, someone correct me if im wrong here with the IDMAX and G5. With DDPhil he is right about ported being "better" than sealed in home audio, but you have to take into consideration how much time and effort was engineered into those home audio speakers initially to get the sub, box, crossover and port suited together, a simple box building program wont suffice. Unless the car audio sub was designed to be run in a ported box, then successful specs would be around everywhere

Grab whichever sub you prefer, build the box as per reccomended and work from there,
I've found alot of the manufacturer reccomended box sizes don't work in every vehicle, often the box needs to be smaller or bigger depending mostly on your car,

build a box you can move around, and just play with the placement for a few months, till you find where you like it, if it doesn't sound right, try decreasing or increasing the box size. Phone books are super handy for decreasing box size, temporarily. Damping material can sometimes help if the box is too small.

Really, your gonna have to just have a play.
You can't just shove the sub in the car, in the reccomended eclosure and expect the best sound ever.
placement is often very important. (although some people will argue convience, or looks of the placement is more important, do what is important to you.)

I really think most people go sealed because it's easy.

I've been doing this a long time. A well executed ported box is still the best option.

Unless you audition the speaker in your car don't waste your time listening to them in a show room or a car unlike your own. Talk to fitters, not sales people and do a little research. Ensure power handling and that you can build the recommended enclouse volumes. Go vented and play with the tuning frequency once the enclosure is in the car.

Exactly :)

Deal with a specialist store and the "sales" guy is an installer.
