G'day Guys,

I'm currently installing some Dynaudio MW150's (5.7" midbass) in my X series falcon. I have previously had these speakers mounted higher up in the dash in custom pods, but the seperation is pretty noticable so I am trying to move them down into the kick pannels. Problem is that there is very little room in between the accelerator and the kick pannel meaning that I am unable to angle/point/position the speaker to point at anything other than directly across.

I have read on the Dyn website and tech sheets that the 60* off-axis response below 1.5KHz is negligible and as such theoretically there shouldn't be any problem with the install.

However I was after the opinions of those who have or do run Dynaudio midbass' as to whether or not there is a real-world difference in response up to 1.5KHz, and the sized enclosures that you are running.

Prompt advice would be appreciated (by next week) as this is as long as I can keep the car off the road whilst all the carpet etc is pulled up.

Thanks in advance

On Axis vs Off Axis
The only way to sure is to tr it.
Build an enclosure that matches the enclosure you will end up with when they are mounted in the kick panels. Put the enclosures in the car and try it out. You may find some surprising results.

Are you running two way or three way?

If it's two way then a significant slice of your frequencies will be coming from your midbass drivers, frequencies that you will want on axis.

If it's three way then this will probably be more negligible and you can focus on getting your midranges / tweets on axis.

Then you will just need a slight angle to avoid cancellation between the midbass drivers.

But it will always be a trade-off between what is possible and what is practical.

Got a pic of your kicks? There should be room there for a 5" somewhere in there.

Am I right in thinking that on axis refers to the speaker being parallel (for lack of a better word) to you? So then having the speaker parallel with the door/kick panel would be x degrees off axis?

G'day guys and thanks for the reply.

Proclass:
Well I would rather avoid building different enclosures if I can help it, but if that is what it comes down to then I guess I will just have to give that a try.

Tim:
Sorry I should have been more explicit.
These 5.7" jobbies will be performing the mid-range (rather than mid-bass) duties as I am running horns which are more than capable of running down low enough. I will be running 8 or 9" Dyns in the doors at a later stage to take care of the midbass duties. Sorry for my bad!

I'll get a pic of my kicks tomorrow but needless to say the problem is on the driver's side and has alot to do with still being able to use the accelerator!

Brady:
On axis means that the speaker is pointing directly at you and everything else is off axis by a certain number of degrees. So for example 30* off-axis would have the speaker pointing away from you at a 30* angle.

How low can your horns play down to? I think they should get down well below 1.5k. if you are running horns I don't think you'll have any major dramas sitting them in the kicks 'off axis'

The horns can play down to 550Hz so they should take care of most of the directional sound cues. Was just making sure that there weren't going to be any issues that I hadn't considered.

Thanks for the help Tim, brady & Proclass - I guess I will give em a go and see how well they sound! :D

Regards
