ok so reading many posts from the champs i get the idea that install can make speakers just ok or awesome.
so this is my question~
the speaker boards at the shops can be decieving with filter settings and other factors ,
some are harsh and some seem soft .
could it be theorised that in a car install ,
a harsh(in your face) sounding speaker could be softened and still be a better install option than a soft sounding speaker that has to be improved in the facial area !

*edit can i replace the word harsh with bright as it seems not right*edit

Not really sure what your question is.
You can't change the character of sound. If a speaker is harsh all you can do is make it softer, you can't remove a quality of the music. Same thing with "soft speakers".

A good speaker should not sound soft or harsh.

well after reading many posts on speaker auditions , most seem indifferent about what they are listening too , i wonder if harsh or soft was the appropriate words , but my question is for the beginner who doesnt have the money to buy speakers that are pro SQ , also after hearing the pro SQ speakers dont all the lesser ones sound either side of soft or harsh.you answered that a harsh speaker can be softened , cool , i was just wondering because i got my splits set at -3db and i would be tossing them if it was the other way around and i needed more Tweeter/dynamic???? yeah the word harsh doesnt seem to fit. :good:

A bad quality tweeter is going to sound rough edged, no matter what you set the attenuation to.

You cant soften the harsh edge of distortion, or power "Through" it, simply by upping the volume.
All you do is make it softer or louder.

So, crap speakers, or a problem along the signal path, will equal a "harsh" sound.

Theres other factors too. How sensitive your ears are, composition of the tweeter (metal dome vs silk vs other), personal preference.

kinda vague on this one, cause i dont know exactly wat you are asking, but are u confusing tweeter volume with the terms harsh or soft?

If in reagrds to demoing on the board, if it sounds too bright, eg ear piercing, it will usually sound even worse in the car

cool dude you answered my question , as i have been asked by a freind to say which split should they get apon them listerning to any that they audition ,,,, i told them that the tweeter could be softened if it seemed overpowering , but it would be alot harder if the tweeter wasnt that dynamic in the first place , is this good advice....(i know i mentioned the word harsh , looking at it again maybe being "to bright" :) is a better term)

Equalization can do a little bit to correct either brightness or dullness... But it really only is a bandaid fix.

If you dont like either of the tweeters, why not audition more speakers until you find tweeters you do like?

Awesome. What we do mean by harsh and soft is how the particular note is delivered. Speakers "colour" the sound, so say the high hats on x speaker will sound different on y speaker.

True , but the dude is shopping at strathfeild , and i needed something to tell him , so i mentioned tweeter stuff and how they can be softened in splits , so i thought i would post the question here and get some expert advise as to overly bright or dull speakers ( i wasnt sure about the terms used , so i guess this changes the original posts message)
