Just wanted to say thanks for the info in this thread. Even though I'm not after a competition level system, following your advice and graphing my system's performance on the baby Jaycar db meter has given me access into audio tweaking heaven. Not only can I plot my sub performance over 1Hz ranges, and adjust my amps bass boost / freq to suit, but I have for the first time EVER been able to really make the most of a parametric Eq. The bottom line is I've never had a car sound so good, the SQ for a medium level system is just superb.
I'm so tired typing this right now, was up very late measuring and tweaking last night, and well, I can't wait to get home and sit in my hot stuffy car and listen to test tones yet again.
I have found the baby $50 Jaycar meter fine to use, and on multiple attemps found about the same figure in each frequency, despite it jumping around a bit.
Thanks a million Shiny!

dips on the other hand arent offensive as they result in a lack of sound, so less of a problem.
Another way of trying to obtain good eq results is rather than trying to cut to find peaks is to boost.
Knowing that if something is peaking we will hear it and it wont sound right, then by boosting individual freqs until we hit one that gets a lot worse when boosted, we can find the peak we need to cut. If we had a peak of 6db at 10k and we boost it 6 db, we then have a peak of 12 db which will sound twice as bad as all the other freqs that only got 6db worse.
anyway you can use your ears if you understand why your doing things although the meter way will work as well, just ears are cheaper and often quicker if you use right methodolgy
