ive been talking to a couple of shops about a sub setup for my vy ute. and about the only wAY ANYONE HAS SAID TO GO IS A BANdPASS SETUP. wit a sealed box in the back and ported into the cabin. now my local shop said 2 10" rf p2 woofers were good and another said 1 p3 would be good. no doubt they both work but which way is going to give me the clearest tightest most responsive bass as this is definatly needed. also being a ute ive been told that having the port wont affect the tightness of the bass is this true? it will be running off an audiobahn a1300hct i think, any way its 600 watss rms @ 2 ohm. any other brands going to sound better? id pay about 400 to 800 for the sub or subs each. any advice is much appreciated.

one $800 sub will sound better than 2 $400 sub...for that price range, look at boston DD Focal, and more that i cant thin kof....also, look at a better amp....a better amp will allow for more control over the sub (slew factor, dampening etc)

800 bucks will buy you some 'cream of the crop' 10" Subs mate. As in a single sub.

Image Dynamics IDMAX10, Diamond Audio TDX10 or D910, Boston Acoustics G5, Digital Designs 3510, Focal 27KX, VIBE Space10, Oz Audio.....the list goes one.....

Any of the above are WAY better then the RF Power line. Their Punch line are pretty good though. Fairly solid monsters.

Your best bet is to audition, and see what you like. We can tell you some may be boomier or tighter then others, but they are your ears.

Personally I like the first shops idea the best.
Considering the small cabin volume of a UTE the band-pass design makes the most sense. I would consider a dual band-pass over a single for the added frequency range. I don’t think you need to spend that much on the drivers but you must ensure the enclosure is designed very accurately. I would use the savings on the subs and spend it up front. Your going to need some very good mid-bass up front to balance the near field effect of being so close to your subs.
Band-pass enclosures when designed right can have huge gains with reference efficiencies as high as 100DB to 110DB.
I think it worth having a good look at this design when your space is cramp.
Cheers

Bandpass can work, it is possible with a 4th order (sealed rear chamber, vented front chamber) bandpass to tune high, with a small front chamber so that the effect of the front port is minimal and it will sound just like a sealed box. But the real problem is you are limited in terms of vent area, since you are limited to the size of the hole that you have (cut). Also, you'll probably want to flare/round off the vent in some way.

Its not really a function of being so close to your subs, but simply that good midbass drivers are always required for good sounding bass...

For high efficiency, I'm not the biggest fan of 4th order, but rather 6th order parallel tuned enclosures. One of the 'punchiest' enclosures I have built was a 6th order, you simply try and design it to have a similar response curve to a sealed or SQ vented enclosure, but obviously over a limited bandwidth, with greater efficiency... The downside is, these can be quite large (basically the size of a SQ vented box + a small front chamber).
If in doubt, do a search and then ask questions!

You can remove the liner tray in the back of VS+ utes and there is a space in there that a box can be built and can then flow into the cabin just behind the passenger seat.

My housemate had a VU SS ute and had a sub in there. Its a tight fit. with basically only 10" subs fitting in there as there is not enuff room for a 12" sub.

I'd dont think I'd be wanting to cut up my ute.

I'd just get 2 IDQ 10's and put them in a sealed fibreglass box behind the seats. They a very shallow mounting depth and are as accurate as any sub out there. With 800-1000w It'll be more than enough bass for anyone.

This way there are no holes in you ute and you don't loose any room in your tray from a large box.

Just my opinion, and thats all it is.

Dls W310B, had one in the mr2. its at the cheaper end of the scale, sounds very nice, just not super loud. requires a 1cu.ft ported enclosure. (port is only 75mm by 140mm if i remember correctly). Also used the rainbow audio hammer, it suits sealed or ported enclosures and sounds really good. also a cheaper sub that performs well.

Is it even legal to cut a hole from the tray into the cabin without an engineering cert. or mod plate or whatever?

(Don't know, and am interested)

im pretty sure there is a gap there, but i cant be sure. KAL SLP on this forum may be able to help you out with this as im pretty sure he has done an install like that before, plus he works for the company that did my housemates ute.

the ute already has three air vent holes from the factory they are blowout panels for letting air out when closing the doors! :yahoo:

This is my the slim line subs that a few manufacturers produce are so good, if you don't want to cut any of the rear firewall to build an enclosure in either the tray or the rear sub tank area these woofers are a great option.

I've had a lot of experience with the Pioneer ones, they work very very well in utes (AS they are designed for this sort of application) and handle plenty of power, in fact if you give them 400wrms or so they work very very well.

I have a customer who had about 700wrms running two of the 12 inh versions in a VU ute, it was damn loud considdering and didn't sound half bad either.

Innovation Audio make fibreglass sub boxes for Commodore utes, they are approximately 0.8 cubic foot, suiting a lot of 10s and 12s.

They fit behind each seat and allow full seat travel.
