if i used an 8 or 10 inch sub in a separate enclosure to some 3ways with an 8in woofer, would i get cancellation or would it sound 'muddy'?
people have said this happens with 6x9s and subs in cars so i'd imagine i'd have the same problem.
the 8in woofers would play up to 700hz, the sub up to 150hz.
thanks in advance
chris

The answer to that question is going to sit with the T/S specifications of the 10" driver you are planning to use. Remember that the principles that drive car audio are very different than those applied in home audio. It is one of the reasons that home audio people don't see eye-to-eye so to speak with car audio people.
My answer to your question is no. A 10 is not going to sound muddy provided the speaker enclosure design suits the application.
To me, what makes a system sound muddy is confusion. Acoustic confussion that is. If you have poorly design crossovers, the wrong enclosure design or ever the wrong speaker selelction you will find it very hard to get things sounding right.
Post some T/S specs and an over view of your system. Don't worry about brand names. Quote specifications of your amps, design idea and application. Then I will be able to help out a bit more.
Cheers
