I wish I had $1 for every time I hear/see this happen, someone's "expert" mate installs their stereo, it has noise problems or doesn't work or they damage some equipment and then they want a free checkout/fix from a professional store, or the more unlikely scenario of them being willing to pay to have it fixed properly by a professional store/installer.
I hope for the sake of the original poster that he/she hasn't had their equipment damaged by shoddy installation.
I don't mean to rant but this is very frustrating for someone like myself who is a professional in the industry to see time and time again.
A lot of consumers are either too "tight" with their money or completely clueless when it comes to this sort of thing and seeing it on a daily/weekly basis is frustrating.
What is even more frustrating is how sometimes the people that come to you with this problem try to tell you how they know more than you or their mate is so very professional they can't understand how it all happened, being diplomatic and not calling them or their friend a complete idiot to thier face is difficult sometimes.

BUT what if the sound was a constant whine and didn't change when you accelerated?
What would the most likley thing be then?

Depends on the vehicle but often it is interferance from an onboard factory computer.
In a BA Falcon for example putting x-overs in the wrong spot can result in noise, running RCAs past factory computers can result in noise etc etc

wow- slightly offended at this comment.... im not stupid, i wouldnt let some random idiot install my sound system, my best mate is a professional installer from JB and installed my sound system in my old car, as well as his own, my other mates and his mates, and obviously customers through JB therefore he is relatively experienced and educated in this, dont assume it was some shoddy job. cheers

The rear focal co-axs were held into TRIM with only 2 screws and rattled like buggary. This was from one of the slightly better stores (i thought) in Adelaide too.
(The same guy had an exhuast professionally fitted and they forgot a gasket halfway along so it sounded like a train. Retards at the exhuast shop wouldn't have a bar of it until we wiped liquid on the spot and started the car to show the bubbles!)
I'm sure this is the exception to the rule, but bah, i'll stick with working on my car myself thankyou!

No offence but I wouldnt let any JB store or there installers touch my car, besides if your mate is such an expert why didn't he fix the problem in the first place rather then just hand it back to you and wiping his hands of it, sounds like a good mate. Unforntunately in this industry there is so many dodgy bros out there but I've luckily managed to find 2 places I would let touch my car.

Car audio is all about compromise. There's no single best way to do anything. Optimization in the face of several variables ... often conflicting ... means compromise. The educated are better positioned to sort through the compromises than the opinionated. Werewolf/Lycan 28-11-2006

Sorry but sometimes JB doesnt equal PROFESSIONAL, why is it that I have never ever installed a system which has had engine noise?
Simple following correct installation techniques, which i beleive in and cutting corners is not my trait. This is why i cannot work for JB.

As George and others have said, just because your mate works in the industry does not mean he knows WTF he is doing. Why would you be asking what route to take if your mate was professional? They would have fixed the mistake in the first place or better still not made it to begin with and if the job was done professionally you wouldn't be here asking how to fix it so I don't have to assume anything, I allready know it is a shoddy job.
I'll be honnest and say I could care less whether you are offended or not I'm just bluntly stating the truth, if you don't like it suck it up!
I'm not trying to openly attack anyone, just pointing out the obvious, and I'm sure other industry PROFESSIONALS will back me up on this one. (Even though I am an opinionated prick
Oh, and BTW I didn't say anything about a random idiot working on your car, moreso I was trying to point out how people can be naive in regards to their own talents or those of "mates" when it comes to installing car stereo gear (or anything related to cars for that matter).
Some of the worst installs I have seen are from so called "professionals" the reason for this, thier confidence (or arrogance) exceeds thier talents to an even greater extent than most backyard installers due to the fact they do it for a living and this leads them into thinking they know better, which often they dont.
You would be amazed at some of the absolute crap that comes out of some so called "professional" workshops, it is not surprising to see something that is a fire hazard or something that has structurally damaged the vehicle. (It doesn't amaze me any more as I have seen far too much of it)
I never implied that I thought you were an idiot... you just assumed that I thought that you were, if it is any consolation I actually feel a little sorry that you have stumbled into this situation.

When your grounding system goes caput, it becomes very easy for this noise to enter and corrupt the signal path. Hence, you get a high pitched whine, which usually increases with revs.
Sounds like a poor mans turbo, through the speakers
In regards to the topic of DIY, yes it is annoying to see shoddy work but until there is a law against it, I think its here to stay. People are even allowed to DIY their own houses (Owner-builders) I'm a tradesman and I was talking to an owner-builder the other day and he didn't even know what a 2x1 is!
Hardware stores have videos showing how to my job, strewth there's even TV shows on the topic! I think this forum is much the same thing and as frustrating as it is, it's the way of the world. I hope I'm not offending anyone, a lot of good points have been raised but I think there could be a better choice of words.
Getting back to the problem that has asked about, Blondd have you had any success in getting rid of the whine? Don't abandon the forum, I'm sure if you keep posting your progress that someone will be able to help you.
cheers
Doug
