I'm going insane trying to work out where i can fit some 6.5" splits into my old MGB.

-The stock door position is no good because when the doors close the speaker is basically firing into your thigh/hip.
-The door isn't too crash hot anyway, cos the deep speakers will hand out prob 8 cm. Which is crapeload in this car cos you sit right up against the door.
-The USUAL kick panel spot (next to the door opening) is no good cos the large hinges from the door live in there, and there isn't enough space to build it out either.

Finally further down the kickpanels, basically next to the pedal is the only possible spot in the front. Problem is it must be mounted flat to the panel (there's BARELY enough room there flat). So my question is, really how bad will the sound be given that the drivers side speaker will be about 70 degrees off axis to my ear? It will also be firing in to my foot to some extent too.

(The passenger side is a snack, so basically my dillema is finding an appropriate drivers side location.)

Midbass woofers tend to produce a 'better' sound when mounted off-axis, because given the nature of the sound at those frequencies, it becomes harder to locate them. This helps improve imaging. However you may tend to get a lower rolloff in the midrange frequencies, especially around the crossover point. If you can drop the Xover point down, Id do that, but you may not really notice a difference. I doubt anyone can really comment on how bad the sound may be, as that depends on the acoustics of the car, but I doubt you will have that much of a problem. Give it a try and let us know. :)

At those frequencies, Ive never found that a problem. Only at the tweeter levels have I found legs can attenuate the sound.

What kind of enclosure and size would you be able to get out of the kick pannel installation?

make a box under the seat, that just comes out enough at the front to mount the woofer in - like a wedge with a box behind it

Seats are barely high enoug fit thick RCAs under, let alone a box! hehe Thanks for the idea anyway.

The kick panels actually have a box section of at least 15L (guess) behind it, the trouble is basically the speaker sticking out into the footwell. In the end I've decided to put my current splits jsut behind me, and will begin looking for some decent 4" splits up front. (I'm also reluctant to cut such a large hole, so the 4s help in that way too.

The imaging won't be perfect - but I think it will still be very pleasant to listen too in the end.

Anyone have opinions on the Focal KP 4" Splits?

you could mount the 6.5's 'behind' the kick panel so they don't stick out, and have a flat grille to protect them...

you can also bend your pedals so that you have got more room.

I think i'll do that eventually, but it means taking the guard off, and to take the guard off have to remove the windscreen etc etc.

Maybe still go for 4 or 5" though.

Bending the pedals isn't really an option. As it is i have to take my shoes off to drive (illegal i know) otherwise my fat feet "mash" too many pedals! haha

alot of people would be in trouble if bare foot was illegal. like half of the people doing P's test drive bare foot. makes it so much easyer to feel the clutch bite ect. especially when just learning.

and ive never heard of some1 being fined for thongs/slip on shoes. but i know it is dangrous, but didnt know it was illegal

A police officer would have to be in a pretty foul mood to book you for not wearing the right shoes!
