So, after all that, should I run modified passive crossovers for my Dynaudio 360's, or tri-amp them with active crossovers with 3 Alpine PDX 2.150 amps? :) :P

You can run the Passive crossover Tri or bi amped, this will be easier to EQ and get to sound nicer,
(I said it would only be easier, not neccessarily better)

It's really up to you which way you want to go,
if your talking about running active off amplifier crossovers,
don't bother,
if you have a proper Processor to do the active filtering,
then it's probably worth it.

Yea, I'll be looking at using the passive crossovers tri-amped, until I can afford a decent processor to do the job.

If the stock crossovers allow triamping, the go for it,
ultimate setup.

As for processors, good processors like the Eclipse DCU-105 or the Alpine PXA-H701 your looking at around $800 a shot.

Obviously you'll need a headunit to suit or a controller to use them.

Still a far cry cheaper than a $4000 custom passive.

Since TheMatt is fighting so hard on the Passive side of things,
I don't blame him, he has to keep convincing to himself that his $4000 + investment in his one off Passive crossovers was worth it.
:D Must be a good thing Im not paying 4k for them then!! Never said they were one-offs either!! :P

I like active systems, always have, and agree they have their advantages. All Im saying is dont dismiss something you dont know anything about, simply because 'theory' says it isnt any good. If you've tried it and it doesnt work, fair enough. In the end, its like the Ported vs Sealed or the Soft Dome vs Hard Dome arguments. In those, Id also say dont dismiss one because its meant to sound bad in theory. You never know, you might be dismissing that very piece of equipment you are striving to get.

To me, whether I have a custom passive or not, doesnt negate the fact that I think they sound incredible. Its not a mind-over-matter thing, just that I think they sound better. I thought this before I bought one, even before I considered buying one. To me, they represent what I got into Car Audio for in the first place.

And No-one ever mentioned they were cheap. 'Cause they aint. I take it your 4k quote was for a 3-way? Because that sounds about right. Certainly on the 'cheaper' side of things anyway. Ive heard of 10k 3-ways, but its all the law of deminishing returns. Personally though, I think the midbass should stay active. Cheaper, more efficient, and the sound isnt as discernable as the midrange/tweeter Xover choices.

In the end, YOU build YOUR car to suit YOUR style of music. Not to anyone elses. So long as you have tried the pot and made your choice based on taste, then thats okay :good:

Well said :good:

P.s. Jeebus I didn't realise custom passives could get THAT expensive... when people said expensive I thought they were talking $500
