I think its a perfectly valid question. Please, enlighten us with a proper answer then (and not something copied out of a google search)

absolutely nothing wrong with a square box, sub bass frequencies are too long to create standing waves inside the box, standing waves in subboxes are just a rumour and you shouldnt listen to rumours, only facts that people can back up their claims with :)

what george said.
QUOTE (RMA @ Feb 6 2010, 01:22 AM) My only regrets are:
Selling Fudd an amp (for a fraction of the real price) that had been returned by Autobarn Geelong which had been incorrectly used by AB Geelong and turned out to be faulty when Fudd started using it.
Whilst he was given a new amp after it could not be fixed, he never acknowledged any of the assistance given and bitches to this day about it.

So does the shape of the box have anything to do with the sound produced by the sub? Assuming the box is sealed.

sweep77, not really...a general rule is to keep about 15cm from the magnet to the box, bit this is more of a cooling issue rather than sound...

and fnutz. i didnt say it wasnt a valid question, i said that it probably belonged more in the beginners section.

and please go to google and search for "square sub box" and tell me wher i might have copied that from.........please, enlighten me

I didn't say that you copied anything yet from a search. It just pisses me off when people are dismissive of other peoples questions, and yet they don't have anything to add to the topic because they don't know any better other than a bit of heresay.

sub frequencies are to long but i always thought that it had something to do with the harmonics?

Well if the sub is crossed over high enough it's possible for the harmonics(or even the fundamental) to be effected by standing wave issues, this depends on the sub design* and the length of the longest dimention of the enclosure (and internal damping). The higher in frequency you go to and the longer the dimentions of the enclosure becomes the more you have to account for possible standing wave issues.

*Subs with high voicecoil inductance and or high Mms will tend to naturally attenuate higher frequencies, including harmonics.

Sub boxes aside - I thought a square (cube) was the worst shape for ANY speaker box? Thats what i've read in a lot of speaker building sites....

Sweep - dont mistake BOX with SQUARE (or Cube, to be more accurate). lil nicko said SQUARE, so I'm assuming he meant cube, not just a rectangular box.

The higher the frequencies, the shorter the wavelengths, and the worse a box like that will be.

As said before, subbass frequencies dont have short enough wavelengths to cause problems with reflections

standing waves, you will still get a reflection off the back wall in a cubed box (bit of dynaxorb or shell foam will help there), but you wont get a standing wave unless your box is pretty big :)
