Take two sets of speakers. Both sets of speakers use the same tweeter, however speaker set B is from a higher range of speakers from the same manufacturer

-Speaker set A (5 1/4")
-Speaker set B (6 1/2")

I have both sets at home. I know I have to use the midbass from set A as 5 1/4 is all it will take in there without door hacking (something I don't really want to do )

The question is then, the passive crossovers from set B are so beautiful, that I can't live without them (well I can, but I choose not to as I have a fetish for beautiful crossovers :D ), but will they sound good used in what is essentially Set A

I know that ensuring the tweeter crossover frequencies are matched to the tweeter is crucial for ensuring the tweet performance, but seeing as both have the same tweeter (and so I'd expect both crossovers to work equally well in that regards), would you expect the midbass lp points also be similar on both passives? And how do you think it would be sound?

The usual response which I'd tell people, and which I'd do myself is to try both since I have both. Only problem is my car has 0 items installed (no amps, no cabling, only the HU that came with the car etcetc) so I can't really until I get off my rear and do something (my timeframe is to give the 2007 caasq season a shot, so I have craploads of time still).

ps. Sorry if this is just rambling jibberish - 9.50am on a Friday :D

The Xover modules for the tweeter you will find will be the same. If not the same, then close enough to the same to be not-noticeable when you switch.

The midbass however, obviously will be different. Its not just the Xover points either. Must Xover units have an impedance control circuit to deliver a near constant impedance to the amp, so that power levels are kept around the same levels. This is matched to the drivers. A lot of manufacturer's though, ensure their drivers are interchangeable on the Xover set, so a single unit is used for varying drivers (take the Dyn X250 for example). Moving in ranges might be different though, and without the company name, cannot tell you exactly.

Question though, is your decision based purely on the look of the Xover or the sound too?

Well the speakers in question are a set of A/D/S 3-series (6.5s) and 2-series(5.25s) jobbies.

I admit a large part of my dilemma is purely based on how visually beautiful those crossovers are on the 3-series, however if it were to sound any better that would also be a fantastic bonus, although I'm not prepared to suffer any degradation in sound just for some added "prettiness".

Why not just mount the Asthetic crossovers as you would, and put the ones that come with the 5.25's hidden in the door or somewhere..? Best of both worlds? Mounting will be easier becase the 'pretty' crossovers don't have any wires, and the sound will be correct de to using the correct crossover.

i agree with above.
except id add a little wire from the 'visual' crossover to make it look like it does something rather than just rice. just screw down the wire and tuck it under the crossover so you dont see the ends of it, but it looks like its going somewhere.

Yeah I never thought of that, although my system isn't planned to be anything really showy at all. The only problem with that is because I have both sets, one set will become x-overless.

Oh well, anyway it looks like any further car audio will be put on hold to pay for a holiday so I've got time to ponder and possibly do the install myself (instead of paying someone to do it).
