Hi Guys

First let me introduce myself on here. I drive a ridiculously small little car, the Daihatsu Copen 660cc Turbo - and before you mock it, it is absolutely awesome. It drives like a luxury go-kart. I should know, I have driven some of the fastest and best cars out there (including the Diablos and Esprits) and also own a modded 3000GT Twin Turbo. Anyway, I digress.

I have sitting on the floor several bits ready for installation including

Genesis SA30 Amp to drive components
Genesis SM60 Amp to drive subs
Focal 5WS x2 Subs
Kenwood PSR71S Components
Dension DH101 Head Unit

You guys may or may not know the equipment listed above, but it's all pretty good A grade stuff. The amps are from an award winning Genesis show car in the UK - handmade by the Genesis guru himself in a special blue aluminium. The component speakers are awesome, with a clear soundstage (but may be too bright for the little copen if not placed correctly). The subs as you guys know are also awesome but need careful boxing and placement. The headunit you probably haven't heard of. It's a pure harddrive (currently 80Gb)single din unit receiver which uses a std laptop IDE hard drive in a caddy that you can connect to the PC. It doesn't have a CD or anything else like that, just a pure hard drive MP3 player and radio. The sound quality is excellent and it has 2 sets of pre-outs, perfect for my situation.

The challenge is this. I need to place the speakers correctly in the car to get the best sound quality. I'm not a high volumen junkie, just a true audiophile with a small soundstage! ;)

I was thinking of using the existing door locations for the main components, and maybe setting the tweeters off just behind or in front of those. I was also thinking of placing the subs in the centre console under the dash firing one to the left footwell and one to the right footwell - but angled towards the driver! Alternatively they could be placed behind the seats, but I'm pretty sure I won't be getting 2-3Litres of enclosures back there!

For those of you who don't know, the copen is the middle one in the cars below :)

So, what do you guys reckon, or recommend a better solution?? Also, where do I place the Amps ... I don't really want them in the boot as its pretty small when the roof is off. Also, where do I get dynamat at a reasonable price in Sydney. I don't want to have everything vibrating all over the place. Remember my focus is on Sound Quality, so its pretty important to ge the placement of all the bits right!

Cheers
Andre

Hi Guys

Right ... here's the kit which has now gone into the Copen (except the subs which will require a box and the head unit which was already installed).

Everything is powered and running and the components sound absolutely awesome I have to say!! I used the original pods for the mids and created some small holes for the tweets just above them. I also place the amps behind the seats and the look really cool where they are!! I'm very pleased. I did take photos of the entire operation (which will form a tutorial for other Copen Club owners) and will post a couple more pics when I can take the time to sort them all out.

Anyway, an appetiser for you all until I sort the rest of the photos of the install. I still need to work out best location for the subs, but I think just behind the gearstick within the centre tunnel I have enough space for about 5litres of box to house them in.

The whole kit ... including the sound damping stuff...

Very nice Gear, Genesis is awesome stuff..
those Focal 5" subs are totally wicked too, should work well mounted between the seats. Seen that done in a few convertables, but with the K series subs. Should have just enough output for a SQ Setup, will need some EQ and a decent sized box to get some depth however.

as for the Kenwoods.. argh.. good luck getting SQ out of them!

Definatly want to be running those actively, you'll need the tuning capability!

Thanks ... that's my intention.

I would normally agree with you on anything jap mass production made - but these PSR71s are pretty special. They won many awards in the UK and upstaged some of the best of Focal and others had at the time - they are a couple of years old now. They are the long lost son of the components that went into the McLaren F1, lightweight and versatile. I have had a previous set in my other car, a GTO Twin Turbo, and they sounded incredible with the Genesis Four Channel and a single 18" sub in the boot on another Genesis 4-Channel bridged.

I have to say, as they are now installed already, I am pretty impressed so far. I'm sure there will be room to upgrade them later, but for now I am over the moon on the SQ. :) All comments valued and appreciated.

Cheers
