Hi all

Now that ive finally got my headunit (eclipse cd5000) its time for me to start looking for my front stage :D

What im after is a nice set of 5x7 splits for my 06 focus, around the 400 dollar mark

i listen to a bit of everything.. mainly hip hop/rock/emo/techno so something thats a good all rounder is what i need.

my current stock speakers are nice and boomy which i like, because relying on a sub for my lower end notes ruins my perception of a front stage...which i hate..

ive been looking at the alpine type r's, but apparently they lack the bottom end notes im after?

please help! from what i can see, only a very few brands actually do a 5x7 split :(

jeeeezus your quick mate!

how would you go about that though, seeing as hole is only 5" wide...wouldnt it hurt sound quality.. something tells me id have a hardtime mounting the spacer too

where theres a will, theres a way...

and mounting mdf spacers wont affect sq... a bad install will

also a round speaker sounds better than an oval speaker

plus you said it yourself, theres not much selection with 5x7/6x8 speakers...

oh and "because relying on a sub for my lower end notes ruins my perception of a front stage...which i hate.."

but sub bass is omnidirectional anyways....... good front stage has nothing to do with a subwoofer (unless you are low passing at 125 or higher and you have lots of rattle in the boot directing your ears behind you)

if i do make some spacers, i wouldnt mind making some pods to sit behind the door trim to give it a bit of angle.

to do this, i plan to use a 5x7 spacer as the base, and a 6.5" spacer on top, with fibreglass going from the outside of the 6.5" to the inside of the 5x7 hole (see attached pic), this way i can mount it using the original 5x7 mounting holes..how would the larger speaker firing through a smaller hole/differing diameter tube affect my sq?

not all 6 or 6.5 inch speakers have massive magnets 6 inches wide you know....

most speakers will have a magnet less than 5 inches wide... so that 5x7 inch hole you have there behind the door trim, just make up a spacer with MDF to fit a 6-6.5 incher..... dont worry about fibreglassing... it can be as ugly as you want, its behind the door trim anyways :P

Boston SL-80's are the go...6" mid and tweeter on a 5x7 plate....so just bolt em in and your good to go...did a BF Ute a few weeks a go with a CDA-9857i H/U, PDX-4.150 amp and a RF P2 12" woofer...for the $$$ the car sounded bloody fantastic...i had used the SL series of splits before but not the plate speakers...Very impressed :)

Have a listen to a set of SL60 bostons...same drivers just mounted onto a 5x7 plate...
Don't argue with an idiot...they will bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience

Hertz HCX570 $228 RRP (Coax)
Hertz ECX570 $150 RRP (Coax)
Hertz ESK570 $247 RRP (Splits)

If your after 5 x 7 these will give you some options if you can not locate other brands and dont want to cut.

Not all things in the car audio industry are created equal...
Especially equipment and installers.

A bad installer won't blame his tools or his skill, he'll blame the equipment!
